I don't think the Sharks or Eels would part ways both still good players to use for 2022. The future talk you speak of would apply to clubs that have quality stock to fallback on. Storm or any other top teams.
Niukore I agree with, he’s a well established player in their top 30 that they can’t replace next year with some better.

Metcalf? On a development contract with several players in front of him. Sharks would be doing us a favour by developing him more, when he’s a lost cause for them. Would be better long term for them letting him go so they can develop other talent they have. Only thing I can see stopping them letting him come here on 2022 is if they think they have a chance of making him back flip and stick around.

Metcalfe will be an interesting watch

Highly touted halfback at underage level, signed with us and was pretty quiet, had a star turn at the Perth 9s but never got close to a NRL match with us and Des was happy to let him go

Showed some interesting signs off the bench late last season though

Just a filler 1+1 article that doesnt quote anyone. Those players can still do their clubs good for 2022. Its a win win for us. This year we get them here faster. Next year we get them 1 year more experienced under an aussie club system. The clubs would be silly to part ways with them early. The season is too grueling to make the wrong decision.

Warrior's halfback Chanel Harris-Tavita has been offered a contract extension at the Auckland club.

It's an apparent change of heart by the Warriors, who had maintained they would assess his form over the first six rounds of next year, before beginning talks about a new deal.

The Herald understands that a contract for the 2023 and 2024 seasons has been tabled.

Harris-Tavita's current deal expires at the end of next season, which had left him free to entertain offers from other clubs from the start of this month.

The Warriors had been in no hurry to extend his contract.

Harris-Tavita has undoubted potential and was the club's 2019 NRL rookie of the year, after making his debut in round four of that season.

He caught the eye with some impressive performances in 2020, especially in the latter stages of the season following Blake Green's departure, when Harris-Tavita became the established halfback alongside Kodi Nikorima.

So hopes were high for Harris-Tavita coming into 2021, but he never really got going in an injury plagued campaign.

After starting the first two rounds, Harris-Tavita missed the next seven weeks, requiring surgery for a stress fracture. He returned in early May, making another four appearances before a pectoral injury in the 42-16 defeat to the Melbourne Storm in round 14.

That left him sidelined until August, when he came back ahead of schedule to complete the last month of the season. But it was struggle to regain top form, as well as match fitness and confidence, accentuated by the Warriors' injury toll and constant personnel changes around him.

That could have been why the club decided to hold off on an extension, until they saw the former Howick Hornets and Pakuranga Jaguars' junior fit and firing.

But that approach came with some risk, if another club needed to add depth in the halves.

While the 22-year-old has yet to prove himself as a top line NRL half, especially in the offensive side of the game, he has a solid base of 37 first grade matches and is a strong defender.

The latest development adds more intrigue to the Warriors' halves picture for 2022 and beyond, following the recent signing of Luke Metcalf from the Sharks.

The club have engaged former Gold Coast Titan Ash Taylor on a train and trial deal, with Shaun Johnson and Harris-Tavita also in place for next season.

Metcalf will join from 2023, unless Cronulla agree to an early release for the former schoolboy star.

The Warriors had targeted Kiwis centre Joseph Manu, with a long term view towards using him in the halves, but the 25-year-old has committed to stay with the Roosters.

The move for Harris-Tavita could indicate Taylor's stay with the Warriors won't extend beyond next season.

Taylor is based in Queensland with his young family and may not be prepared to relocate across the Tasman anyway, should the Warriors finally return to their permanent Mt Smart base for the 2023 season.

All but confirms neither Taylor nor Nikorima will be here beyond this season should CHT sign.
We'll have SJ, Metcalf and CHT

Its easy to forget about some key, existing players while we search for further talent.
Players like Curran had a pretty good year last year and should only get better.
The squad as it stands now is pretty decent, Manu or not, with a mix of young developmental players, and mature mid to highly experienced. Anything signings from here on would be an added bonus.

Hooker Taniela Otukolo has joined fellow 2021 rookie Edward Kosi in being upgraded to the Vodafone Warriors’ fulltime NRL squad for the coming 2022 NRL season.

One of six Vodafone Warriors players to make their NRL debuts in 2021, the 19-year-old Otahuhu Leopards junior had his club contract extended in May and went on to play three first-grade matches following his June debut.

“Taniela is another terrific example of a player who has come through our Sky Sport Future Warriors programme,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

“Nathan Brown and the coaching staff rate him really highly and this is reward for him. He’s in line to play a huge role in our club’s future.”

Otukolo upgraded to top 30

Hooker Taniela Otukolo has joined fellow 2021 rookie Edward Kosi in being upgraded to the Vodafone Warriors’ fulltime NRL squad for the coming 2022 NRL season.
The promotion comes after the 19-year-old Otahuhu Leopards junior had his club contract extended to 2024 a month before his first-grade debut against the Newcastle Knights in June this year.

One of six Vodafone Warriors players to make their NRL debuts in 2021, Otukolo went on to play three first-grade matches.
Otukolo is one of a group of young Vodafone Warriors players handed their debuts over the last two seasons including Eliesa Katoa, Tom Ale, Reece Walsh, Rocco Berry, Kosi, Viliami Vailea and Jackson Frei.while Adam Pompey debuted in 2019.
The club has also just announced Otukinekina and Valingi Kepu have been upgraded to NRL contracts from 2023.

“We’re committed to our future as well as our present,” said Vodafone Warriors head coach Nathan Brown.
“Taniela has worked really hard and gained invaluable experience in the NRL this year.
“He had only just turned 19 when he made his debut this year and might have had a few more games but for injury.”
As well as lining up in the NRL, Otukolo appeared for feeder club Redcliffe in the Queensland colts’ competition where he helped the Dolphins to within a win of making the grand final.
His promise saw him used in the Vodafone Warriors’ Jersey Flegg Cup side (under-20) when he was only 17 in 2019 and he excelled for the club’s S G Ball Cup (under-18) team in 2020 when he scored nine tries in six games.

The Warriors are close to extending Wayde Egan’s contract at the club, with the hooker’s current deal running out at the end of next season.

The 24-year-old had previously been told that he wouldn’t be offered a new deal until a least half a dozen games of the 2022 season had been played.

But following the departure of Peter O’Sullivan as the club’s recruitment and retention manager, Warriors power brokers have had a rethink and decided sign up Egan straight away.

“We’re not far away from tying something up with Wayde,” Warriors’ general manager football Craig Hodges said.

“We’ve been talking to him and his manager for the last week or two.

“We’re not far away from locking something in there and hopefully we’ll have a bit of news in that space in the next week or two.”

Warriors’ Craig Hodges general manager football says the club have reassessed a number of retention decisions recently.
Securing Egan’s future gives the club stability at the crucial position of dummy half for the next few seasons.

Egan’s form at the Warriors during his earlier time at the club was sporadic, but last season he showed his worth, particularly as for most of the campaign he was the only specialist and experienced No 9 on their roster.

As Stuff revealed last week, the Warriors have upgraded hooker Taniela Otukolo to a place in the club’s 30-man roster next season and he is still regarded as a key player for the future.

But since O’Sullivan left for the Dolphins and Hodges was promoted from an assistant coach to his new role, he, along with CEO Cameron George and head coach Nathan Brown have re-evaluated some of the previous retention decisions.

“We reassessed everything to decide what direction we wanted the team to go in and how we needed to get it there,” Hodges said.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/authors/david-long

“Some things stayed the same, some things we tweaked and some things we changed wholeheartedly

“But at the end of it we put our stamp on it pretty quickly and we’ll continue to do that.”

Part of Hodge’s role will be giving the club the best roster possible next season, but also preparing for the future and showing younger players that there is a clear pathway into the first-grade team.

“We’re looking to win immediately, we’re trying to build a successful team in the short term, as well as building one in the medium term,” Hodges said.

“So we need to have guys like Taniela, Viliame Vailea and Rocco Berry and we’ve got lots of young guys with some of them having had a taste of first grade and some not far away from it.

“But by having some stability in our starting team, it means those young guys don’t have to be rushed, so they don’t get put in ahead of time.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/women-in-sport

“More importantly, it means they’ll get what they earn, so they’re not getting free jerseys before they’re ready for it.

“If they earn the right to take the spot and leapfrog the guy in front of them, then they’ll get it and that can only be good for our club.”

As for the recruitment side of things, Hodges said getting in some outside backs was his priority.

“One or two outside backs would be really good,” he said.

“We’ve got a very good forward pack. With Shaun [Johnson] coming back and Ash Taylor in our system, we feel like we’ve got some decent halves, with what we already had.

“We’ve got some really talented young outside backs and we feel our wingers are really strong with Marcelo [Montoya] and Dallin [Watene-Zelezniak], but we need to make sure we’ve got genuine competition, to keep our young guys improving.

"So we’re certainly on the lookout for one or two more outside backs.”

The 23-year-old, who has made 29 first-grade appearances in the past three seasons, is due to start training with his new club tomorrow following a mutual agreement shaped between the Vodafone Warriors and the Broncos.

Two-year extension for Egan

Hooker Wayde Egan has extended his time with the Vodafone Warriors after signing a new two-year contract until the end of the 2024 NRL season.
The 24-year-old, who was off contract after the 2022 season, will now stretch his stay to at least five seasons.
“We’re really excited to have Wayde with us for a further two years,” said Vodafone Warriors general manager football Craig Hodges.

“He impressed throughout the season giving us real consistency with his work at hooker.
“We like what he brings to the squad and to the club as a whole with his work ethic as well as his attitude off the field where he has a passion for community causes.”
Like many in the current squad, Egan is yet to play a home game at Mount Smart Stadium after appearing in 38 matches in his first two seasons with the club.

“He gave us tremendous value this year, performing consistently well and standing out as one of our best players across the season.”
The former Penrith hooker was among the four nominees for the club’s prestigious Simon Mannering Medal alongside Addin Fonua-Blake, Euan Aitken and award winner Tohu Harris.

Ash Taylor upgraded to Top 30 contract for 2022:

Taylor signed on one-year deal

Former Gold Coast play maker Ash Taylor has been upgraded to a fulltime NRL contract for the Vodafone Warriors’ 2022 campaign.
The 26-year-old Queenslander was initially signed on a train and trial deal in October with a club top 30 option for 2022.
“We’re excited to confirm Ash is staying with us. He has been a great addition since joining the club and has more than met our expectations,” said Vodafone Warriors general manager football Craig Hodges.

“He has added so much with his training ethic, enthusiasm and his all-round contribution.”
Taylor makes the Vodafone Warriors his third NRL club after one appearance for Brisbane in 2015 and 114 for Gold Coast from 2016-2021.

“Ash has fitted in well with our group and we we’re really enjoying having him around,” said Vodafone Warriors captain Tohu Harris.
“He has given us an experienced voice and has added to the competition in our halves.”
Taylor ended his Gold Coast career with 16 appearances in 2021 as the club made the finals for just the fourth time and the first since 2016.
