Jirah starting in the second row is super surprising too! Never looked at him as an edge player.

Random Question:

I know Connor and Ponga were close and probably still are. Not saying Connor was a bad influence on Ponga but it seemed like they were more interested in things outside of football than football itself. With Ponga gone, you guys reckon Ponga will focus more on his football and become an improved player on the field?

Don’t know if that’d be the sole reason for any improvement he shows this year but I have high hopes he’ll have his best year yet and actually earn his spot when talked about as one of the best players in the game.

Excited to see Momoisea on an edge in the starting team. I thought middle was his go after his few games at the back end of last year, but makes sense given that we are lacking in that area, he's played second row in the juniors and he would be one of our more mobile forwards along with Frizell. I like it

It’s good to finally have an edge backrower we can see becoming a real threat in the form of Jirah! It is only early days but he runs a quality short line, as Klemmer clearly took advantage of. We have been begging for a backrower who can hit a ball short and with punch for years! Fitz did it on the left the first year Pearce was here but for some reason never adapted his game with variation, making it easy to defend.

we wont be challenging for the title as long as Mann, Fitzgibbon and Hunt is in our 17, All 3 are average fringe first graders and are good for depth only.

To see Mann named in the 17 fillls me with dred. The other 7 finalists last year and their lock forwards below. And we have Kurt Mann ? Jesus have mercy.

Manly - Jake Trbojevic
Souths - Murray
Easts - Radley
Penrif- Yeo
Parra - Brown
Storm- Fenucane
Titan - Tino

To be fair, Mann wasn't that bad in the trial. It was against the Bulldogs though. This trial against the Storm will be a much better reflection of how good Mann will be during the season. I doubt the Storm will give him the room and options the Doggies did.

Mann looked alright, but as you said it was against the Dogs. How will he perform under real pressure. Will he force his passes like a robot rather than reading the game? Unfortunately I think that's where he'll come undone.

The less he did, the better he looked.
If he's being asked to be the key link man in our attack it will be a spectacular failure.

I can’t for the life of me understand the theory behind Mann playing such a role.

Here we are, with all and sundry claiming we are short a halfback now that Pearce has gone, and yet Kurt Mann is planned to be distributing 3 and 4 plays per set like he is Cooper Cronk.

Give an actual Halfback in Clune that job, he will manage just fine, and play Barnett at lock for the skills he provides in multiple areas.

I can cop you saying that about Mann and Fitz but Hunt is a bloody good winger and would slot easily into any of the top 6 sides with little resistance

Based on last year he would "easily" replace who ?

To'o or Crichton
Johnson or Paulo
Saab or Garrick
Jennings or JOC
Tupuo or Ikavalu
Dunster or Ferguson

Slot "easily" into a top 6 side ? lol. If Hunt is our best winger we are in all sorts. Fringe first grader in my opinion, a good depth player in the squad and nothing more. You can afford 1 Hunt in the side if the other winger is JOC or Tupou or To'o or Garrick etc

I guarantee not a single winger from a top 6 side will be lining up this year against Hunt and having a sleepless night before the game.

The role of player managers must be a consideration when answering this. It's the only explanation I can think of. When Toohey last year was saying Mann was one of our highest paid players ( during his contract negotiations ) I nearly fell off my chair.

A serious WTF moment.

Mann tries hard, and that's an admirable quality, but no way known are we challenging for a title with him in our starting side.

Hymel Hunt for mine is solid. Happy to have him in the team, solid as a rock, perhaps like McManus was but easily replaceable if the talent comes along.

As has been mentioned this off-season, he may be 3rd on the pecking order for AOB.
