Just relax a bit

stan are going to provide foxtel with competition

yes it sucks we may have to be owned totally by nine but foxtel are where we get ripped off the most

those nrl pay tv ratings are gold
Paramount would be better if they did pitch in with $6bn over ten years for AFL.

I can't see Stan rocking the boat given nine and fox are tied at the hip for NRL.

Lets not forget in all the doom and gloom that $400 million a year is not to be sneezed at and the NRL just have to play the long game and get a new team up and running in Perth before the next deal is done. Hopefully they can also put some money and effort into junior football and co fund just like AFL have done some junior ground upgrades with the various state governments in not just NSW but QLD, Victoria and also WA.

We are starting way behind AFL but there's no reason the NRL can't negotiate a much improved deal next time round and let's remember Rugby League is a game virtually made for TV and in my opinion vastly superior to AFL. The game also has another few aces up it's sleeve in Origin and especially international football.

International test matches and a World Cup are something that AFL can only ever dream about and we need to capitalise on this strength including it's inclusion in some form at the Brisbane Olympics even if just as a demonstration sport.
While all good points, the level of invest to catch up will be massive. Even with new markets (if they ever do it), we're entering into a period with technology, entertainment options and other mediums (metaverse etc) rapidly disrupting the norm. Establishing a new market in say WA will take twice as long, twice as much money for maybe half the result by the time of the next deal. AFL is cashed up, have assets and long term governance and determination to maybe see it through. I say maybe because nothing is certain with sports interest. Just look at how quickly cricket has waned despite truly being our national sport.

I think you need to go offshore and you need to find some service wanting to get a foothold into the Australian market. That’s our best bet.

We have been played by every existing Australian media provider and they obviously know we don’t have the smarts. Thus we need to clear the existing administration, particularly anybody involved in the game for a long time, headhunt people from the outside with experience, who have no league baggage and who can look at things logically and with a clear vision and strategy without being drawn up on all the political crap and self interest. Also somebody who is a proven negotiator.

I think ultimately you have to. Having no presence in two metro markets has cost us significant money.

In any case, I am certain that Perth would work mainly due to its demographics. Adelaide on the other hand would be tougher but still nowhere near impossible

So nrl clubs are getting a higher distribution from the arlc with almost half the number of players ?

wow

where are all those people bashing vlandys now
That's nothing to be proud about. The reason it's so high is because many of our clubs don't generate enough revenue to stand on their own feet. Every cent that's wasted on propping up a financially unviable NRL club is one less cent spent on growing the game at grassroots level. Fumbleball are investing millions at the grassroots level and it has paid dividends. They're at least 30 years ahead of us and widening the gap.

Look at where RU was in 2002 and how far they've fallen over the last years. That could happen to our game.

Ch9 bullied V'landys into giving them a discount in 2020 then used the savings to buy exclusive rights to broadcast RU. These guys don't rate our game and see us as a bunch of mugs.

Seven and Fox got discounts from the AFL. It was the thing to do at the time.
Ch9 used the money they got back to invest in a rival product. This was after they blamed the NRL for their ratings being shit after they sold the fourth game they acquired under Dave Smith's deal and simulcast rights to Foxtel, which was the actual reason their ratings tanked.

For the first time in last year`s Australian Sports Commission`s nation wide sports participation figures they included a single Tackle League figure and also a combined Tackle, Touch and Tag League figure ( because the three are so closely related ) which comfortably outnumbered the nationwide fumbleball figures and we know how dodgy they are.
Not bad for a sport down on its` knees. There`s plenty to work with yet with Rugby League, not only a brilliant Tv product but oodles of potential within the complete Touch, Tag and Tackle formats to grow the game for both participants and fans.

The great thing about tag and touch is it can be played by mixed gender teams. That's huge in today's PC climate and great for schools.

So I`m assuming that $450m is your estimate of combined broadcast and non-broadcast revenue advantage that fumbleball ( or at least you claim ) enjoys over League.
Happy to be corrected if I`m wrong but if it costs fumbleball approximately $50m to run a club as opposed to approximately $30m to run an NRL club isn`t a good chunk of that supposed $450m used just maintaining the status quo.
this is a good point actually, add to that 18 womens teams... AFL will still be raking in the revenue but they must be spending truck loads more than NRL does.

What are the updates of Marvel by Telstra?

The last deal had $50 a year x 7 = $350m

Leaves $145m or $21m a year for the wifi upgrade or whatever it is

Like I said when the deal was announced more details are needed

The Statement on AFL.com I posted mentioning Telstra and Marvel updates into the website
The redevelopment of Marvel has nothing to do with Telstra as far as I’m aware. AFL received Government funding for it.

The technology upgrades are seperate to the redevelopment and as you say deal with

Where are you getting this $205m figure from? Oh you mean the $225m Victorian government investment.

In any event, AFL owns Marvel outright. So any investment in it only increases the value of the asset which puts AFL in an even stronger position to obtain loans and finance in future.

I don’t think we need any more details to understand that for 2020-27 period - AFL will earn at least $500m more than NRL.

Nor do we need more details to understand AFL will have state of the art facilities and stadia for all clubs and regional centres in Australia due to superior management and administration.

Tell me a government in Australia that will be looking forward to dealing with PVL after his outburst at NSW Government. NRL brand copped a pasting for his rhetoric about giving money to NRL over flood victims. Meanwhile, under Gil’s leadership AFL just get shit done behind closed doors, with fantastic stakeholder engagement.

Take solace though, NRL bought a pub on Caxton street - without any consultation with Commission members. Oh and dragged into the courts to take on NSWRL. All smooth sailing ahead for NRL no doubt

The discussion at hand is TV rights

How much are FTA and Pay TV paying to show AFL?

How much are FTA and Pay TV paying to show NRL?

Anything else is an Apples v Oranges debate

$550mill cash a year
$370mill cash a year

or if you want to compare apples with apples

Afl Australian tv $550mill cash
nrl Australian tv $350mill cash

as you’ve been told countless times But keep choosing to ignore or deny.

Where are your links?

You fail to prove it though so I ask someone else because you are too stupid to provide something that should be easy.

Links for what? we know the afl deal is $4.5bill of which $4bill plus is cash.
we don’t know the splits but there seems to be an assumption by everyone that telstra is staying at $50mill A year so we can take that out of the $4.5bill. Which leaves $4.15bill. How much of that is contra is unknown.in the last deal it was $16mill ayear. Safe to say in this one it will be significantly more. Will it be more than $40mill a year? Unlikely. That takes it to around $550mill a year cash without telstra, which also links back to the $3.85billion figure that has been mentioned in Number of articles.

undertand or are you still too stupid?

Reading through all these posts is depressing.

What's more alarming is the gulf in membership numbers between the two codes.

For 2022
AFL has 1.2M members
NRL has 294K members

Let's say the average cost of membership is $300
AFL generates 360M annually
NRL generates 90M annually

That's 270M difference every year. If you add the gulf in TV rights, sponsorships etc... You're looking at easily half a billion dollars more circulating in the AFL compared to NRL.
