Well it will all come down on this statement.
from the AFL on website.

The total agreement we are announcing today with our broadcast partners covers seven seasons from Season 2025 – until the end of the 2031 season and will deliver footy a financial return of $4.5 billion.

Lets play lawyers game on this.
First we all know this contract is for a time period of 2025 to ( now released) 2031. This is seven years , sure.
So the contract that they signed was for the years 2025-2031, but does that not mean that the 2023-2024 contract amount could not be added or counted in the final figure of $4.5 billion of the deal they signing today.

And whats a financial return about, I though this was a broadcaster negotiations.
Anyway the above statement by the AFL could be disingenuous that the contract was signed today was for 7 years BUT the final 'financial return' ( yet to be explained ) includes yet to start contract ( 2023-2024) money.

So you read the above two ways- which i think was intentional. But again if they are getting over $500m CASH ONLY yearly from the two broadcaster, i say well done you win. But I wait for the Broadcasters report regarding cash amounts. I think only Seven will have to report but that will give you a indication of what foxtel possibly pays/paid.
Yes, every media outlet is lying and the AFL is lying. Seven and Fox is lying. You are right and they are wrong.

Seriously, some of these companies are public with shareholders. You cannot lie about this stuff. $642m as year is a great deal. By way of comparison, the NFL deal doubled recently to $10B each year ($14.8B AUD), so an increase of 30% by the AFL is awesome compared to the NRL who went backwards, but not necessarily by international standards.

Can't remember, probably Todd, not sure. Someone here will remind us.

Yeah good call. Jobs for the boys. That’s almost as bad as the Raiders passing on Craig Bellamy and signing Matt Elliott.

They won’t say it because their allusion about V’Landys and fumbleball would shatter in front of them.

People on here still believe we don’t need a national competition or that teams should play at dilapidated grounds. To admit they are wrong now and that the fumbleball deal is what is quoted means that they would have admit to everything about the game and V’Landys (such as above) being wrong as well

I think questions need to be asked out of all this why does News Ltd favour AFL so much over NRL? why does this organisation want to devalue broadcast rights for League so much. I mean they are basically taking money from NRL fans and paying the AFL with this deal. We're back to the early 2000s when League was often smashing AFL in TV ratings on Foxtel but only got half the money. How is this allowed to happen? The NRL clubs must be so tied up in their own operations, or so trusting of the head body when they should be f**king protesting!

I don't think V'landy's is an idiot or a poor negotiator, I think he was placed in the chairman role to f**k over the NRL for the good of News and its main competitor!!

Here here. League fans and community should be rioting. Instead you have some people on here still defending V’Landys.

Looks like V'Landys has stuffed up badly or more likely is a Newscorp lackey. Either way he needs to fall on his sword or NRL clubs need to band together with the QRL and NSWRL and have him removed.

Since our deal can't be renegotiated V'Landys needs to go and his successor can have zero ties to Newscorp. Time to play hardball and start building some competitive tension by restarting a digital presence. As much as I hate to admit it we have to have a long term outlook like the AFL not the short term panic negotiations we seem to have when a rights deal comes due.

this would tie in with an earlier report mentioned on here , that the 2 year 946 million 23-24 & the 7 year deal 25-31, are linked together & amounted to 4.796 Mill for 9 years
or 533 Mill pa

It was updated. News have an annoying habit of just updated older articles now.

Statement on the AFL site matches what Mclachlan said live. The deals arent linked.

Mclachlan also said during the presser that the cash component was "north of 4".
