2023-2028 next tv deal discussion

It’s only for 8 weeks so nothing
Foxtel paid them handsomely for it. They've never compensated us for the privilege and burdened us with the Fri 6pm game.

If we want to send a message then we'll need to contact the ARLC and tell them to grow some balls and stand up to News Ltd or we'll walk away from the game, then contact Foxtel and tell them we're unsubscribing from them until they stop tipping us off.

Statement isnt wrong, your comprehension of it is.

That 90 million is a 5 year NRL deal to 2027. 12m cash and 6m contra per year. Not 90m per year.

and for the 800th time - ITS PART OF THE BROADCAST DEAL. Not a separate deal, not a naming rights deal with contra shoved in.

The entire deal is extending with all partners. Im sure you know that Telstra, Fox and Seven have had the rights together since 2012.

The AFL are getting the same amount from Toyota for naming rights as the NRL are for both NRL/NRLW naming rights AND a tech partnership.

Now if you want to add the Telstra amount - which wasnt part of the NRL rights agreement - to the NRL rights for balance you have to add the AFLs naming rights agreements - which are 18m a year from Toyota (AFL) and 2-3m a year from NAB (AFLW).
I no longer read the posts from people who dispute the reported figures. I stopped reading their posts months ago because they make no sense and go around in circles. They're just clutching at straws trying to convince themselves everything is hunky dory. It's tiresome and bizarre how they refuse to accept reality, but denial and stubbornness are embedded in rugby league culture. It's why the game has never reached its potential. Most of the ones guilty of it appear to be NSWRL fans who want a return to the NSWRL days.

Unless there is another bidder the arlc can’t do anything

remember what they did to Dave smith ?

the reality is news ltd has huge control over the game

but the landscape is changing. Nine have shown getting the union and bidding for the afl they want stan to grow.

that will make sure foxtel has to finally pay what the nrl is worth

especially now as kayo ratings are available and we can all see which sport is the only relevant one on foxtel

right now foxtel are paying the nrl unders to subsidise their losses on afl.

the funny thing is you were saying foxtel are going broke a few months ago

now you believe they have found an extra 200 million pa to give to the afl for a total of around 470 million pa lol

But that is based on the idea that we will ever be giving what we are worth or thinking that they are ever going to have to. We have been shown up on every TV negotiation and that’s including your man.
Yeh I’m still a vlandys fan that’s for sure

I don’t turn on him just because gill made an announcement that is clearly bs

we will get team 18 announced next year or the year after. Throw in the potential of Monday night football plus nz2 being the winning bid and that’s something of benefit for all 3 networks that cover nrl

It’s going to be funny when the afl players association asks for a 2.5 million rise in the cap and the afl replies with we can only afford one million in cash but we can give the rest in contra

free Telstra for life

I source all my figures. If you choose not to read that is fine but you can't get involved in a discussion without facts

I will be sooner than that. They will put their financials out, Channel 7 already has at $170m.

With the amount of streaming services out there currently, I'd say we are going to see a lot of consolidation/closure in this sector over the next few years.

I can't see Stan surviving.
Stan is about driving subscriptions, even at a loss so it can be bought out by a competitor, say, Prime or Fox for example

Sure you can’t bc you are an afl fan

but in the real world stan are going to help rugby league to a massive pay day

but hey you have a few years to enjoy the limelight
lol my disgust is from an underlying sense of loyalty to RL. I came to this country in 1990 from an Indian background and grew up in the inner west. RL was my fast-track to assimilate into Sydney society then. Now I live in Annandale and see AFL dominate every aspect including weekend sport. It saddens me immensely.

Not that I want to play the violin, but I grew up in an era where we would refer to the southern game as "gay"FL, it would have been more accepting to be a skinhead than play that game. Now its been completely flipped on its head.

I must admit that my distain for AFL has softened over the years, and I actually quite like watching test match rugby. If the Swans are in the finals, I'll watch their games in September, but in reality at most the final two quarters - i cannot watch an entire game. I have been to maybe three AFL games in my life, I personally don't get it (apparently, it is meant to be better in real life, but wasn't for me).

For further context, I work in a high profile corporate job as a banker. I deal with companies everyday - good and bad. My admiration for the AFL is merely out of their governance and ability to achieve commercial success. To me its like a parallel world whereby we have apple products with nokia success.

funny

im pretty sure QLD NSW & the ACT went through a pandemic too

I could be wrong tho
hang on..
yea just checked

Charming.

The AFL literally relocated well over 1,000 people - players, coaches, medical staff, wives, kids. Probably around 2,000. The NRL did not have to do this.

Look Panther, if you truly think that PVL is running the NRL better than the AFL is run then good luck to you. If you do think that the NRL is doing such a great job, then why is the AFL so much more cashed up? Ratings are the same, so what is the reason the AFL rights are higher if PVL is so great?

The man is a sleazy, insular, old school Sydney centric racing administrator with a big mouth. His only achievement off field is starting one week before the AFL during COVID. IF the NRL wants to continue to play second fiddle to the AFL than, then they have the right man at the top.

That’s the problem mate. We have been snookered because our boss stupidly decided to not put everything out to tender.

The only reason fumbleball got that bid is because every possible network bid on it. So unless Seven have got more money than you or I imagine there are just going to be less bidders. We’re essentially banking on a new subscriber or two to come into the market within the next 5 years.

Also I just don’t have the faith that you have in this Stan idea. For example the same conditions were prevalent six months ago and they didn’t bid on it then.

It’s not only the difference in the deals, it’s the process in which the deals were made.

AFL put it out to tender, get all parties bidding against each other and get the best possible deal. That’s how it should be done.

On the other hand, V’Landys couldn’t even be bothered to put everything out to tender. Now, that is either straight out negligence or to be a conspiracy theorist, he is a straight out News Ltd stooge/plant. I am thinking the latter because he might be a lot of things but I don’t think he is that stupid.

Either way, though. he has got to go on that basis.

Btw adding another NZ side is probably not going to get us the maximum money. There would not be the interest in another Kiwi side from Australian broadcasters and that is obviously where the difference is coming from.

They are going broke if the cost of content versus income from subscriptions is anything to go by. There's no way a $27.50 per month Kayo subscription covers what they pay for all of their sport content. They make.oney from Foxtel, which has lost customers to Kayo and Binge.

Murdoch is loaded and can afford to bail them out.

V'landys was dumb enough to gift the PTV rights to Foxtel long before negotiating with Ch9. If he waited like AwFuL did then Stan would have been in a position to bid for everything.

Our only hope is Paramount+ and Stan being desperate for content in 2028 or Prime Video, Disney+ and Netflix throwing their hat in the ring. Really though it's only Paramount+ and Stan who are likely to bid as they have ties with FTA.

I think it is worse than dumb, it is either negligent or it’s deliberate. He might say stupid things but I get the sense he is not that stupid - actually I don’t think anybody in such a position would be that stupid.

Like seriously you don’t do any type of business by accepting the first deal that is put in front of you and also at a time where there is no real pressure to do a deal, particularly at such a length.

I skim though your posts. I just couldn't be bothered getting into an argument about how much is contra because we'll never know the full truth. We can only go on what we're given by the news reports. V'landys hid the true figure from us, which is very dubious and makes me think he's a News Ltd stooge.

shows you what a bubble these fumblers live in
this one actually thinks that the NRL didn't have to relocate its competition due to covid
hahahaha

can someone build zips into their bubbles so they can occasionally join the rest of us in the real world

V'landys is looking out for himself. He's keeping News Ltd and Ch9 happy by giving them what they want in exchange for favourable coverage so they don't get him sacked. We saw what happened to Grant, Smith and Greenberg. The clubs will turn on the Chairman and CEO as soon as the broadcasters chuck a fit.

The only hope that I have is that he f**** off back to racing. The next problem is finding somebody decent to replace him - we’ll probably recruit from within and thus the cycle continues.
