I skim though your posts. I just couldn't be bothered getting into an argument about how much is contra because we'll never know the full truth. We can only go on what we're given by the news reports. V'landys hid the true figure from us, which is very dubious and makes me think he's a News Ltd stooge.

I am not arguing contra either, No one knows but Fox aren't paying $470m a year either for the AFL rights either.
Given we know ch7 is paying $170m

So to say they are is just wrong and doesn't help the discussion

How do you know? Why would it be $470mill?
It seems incredible but if paramount did have a genuine bid of $600mill a year then they may well have had to pay massively if they had to keep rights to stay in business.

we don’t know what the $643mill split is either in partners or contra/cash and probably won’t as fox have no obligation to announce what they are paying and didn’t do for nrl to this day. We’ll see contra eventually but will be quite a wait until 2025 annual report comes in lol.

im still staggered at the amount they have got. Even if it had been $500mill it would have been impressive but to get $643mill for 7 years is quite numbing.

I also can’t believe how well they played it. gil must be a master negotiator. He somehow managed to convince the tv partners to repay the covid reduction and then used that inflated amount as the start point for the next deal! Guys a genius.

While all good points, the level of invest to catch up will be massive. Even with new markets (if they ever do it), we're entering into a period with technology, entertainment options and other mediums (metaverse etc) rapidly disrupting the norm. Establishing a new market in say WA will take twice as long, twice as much money for maybe half the result by the time of the next deal. AFL is cashed up, have assets and long term governance and determination to maybe see it through. I say maybe because nothing is certain with sports interest. Just look at how quickly cricket has waned despite truly being our national sport.
Like your point about cricket, the game has lost it’s sole in this country and there’s no coming back IMO, no one cares anymore, the game is a complete sell out and not of the packed house variety, the Australian captain used to be the most recognisable person in the country, I don’t even know who the captain is anymore.

The T20 tournaments have made opposition players more likable, there isn’t the same hatred towards them anymore meaning no one gives a f**k, it’s like watching your 2 brothers in a boxing match.

According to various sources, then NRL chief executive Todd Greenbergand his then chief commercial officer, Andrew Abdo, presented a paper to the commission in late March strongly advising against signing a new broadcast deal during the pandemic.

hmmmm.

AW: Was it a mistake doing the deal with Foxtel during the pandemic?

At the time, Fox needed an asset on its sheet to continue its viability. If we didn’t come into play, there’d be no Foxtel.

then why the f**k didn’t he hold them over a barrel?

We set up the platform for AFL to be able to do this. If the game hadn’t started on May 28 [2020], and both the NRL and AFL cut their broadcast requirements to make Fox and Nine viable because they were in uncharted waters, they [the AFL] wouldn’t have the platforms to do what they’re doing.

what an arrogant prick. And notice how he keeps bringing up his covid response to deflect current criticism? Also he fails to mention that afl got back all of their covid reduction whilst we got nothing.

This times 1000%.

He is nothing but a stooge. You wouldn’t negotiate a reduced deal or essentially roll over the current deal if this was your attitude. Essentially is the epitome of a contradiction between actions and thoughts

Like I said, who is he representing, the NRL or Fox?

I would suggest Fox or he is the most incompetent negotiator ever

Surely nobody would go into a negotiation believing that the other party needs your product or service (essentially of the belief that they need you more than say you need them) and then completely roll over to them on each and every thing, including even digital platforms.

Like seriously this retort makes him look worse

This is a disgrace...this idiot needs to go.

That was the most ridiculous refutation that I have seen, read or heard. The arrogance or undue confidence in which he states his refusals is particularly galling.

Some of the stuff he has said is almost inadvertent comedy gold ‘Yes Minister’ doublespeak - ‘ The AFL has done us a favour’ Rightio. ‘If Pay catches a cold, we all cough’ They obviously got better pretty quick

Hopefully that CEO who said that it is catastrophic is the prevailing view because he should have been turfed out yesterday over this.

Also the fumbleball circle jerk on the comments makes me furious but who can blame them for celebrating I guess

Andrew Webster: Is the AFL’s deal of concern to you?

Peter V’landys: No, not at all. What you’ve got to understand is this deal doesn’t come into effect until 2027 [sic], so it’s two years away. We will be negotiating our deal pretty soon to take us up to 2031. We’ve got a few things up our sleeves, which I can’t say too much about it, but the clubs have nothing to be worried about.
---
well he's got to do this and then outperform, otherwise i can't see why we would have him as chair any longer. he's failed to get the funding for so many stadium deals now and clubs would have been counting on increased corporate yield there too.

but i still don't understand why we'd rush to deal again? is he just trying to line up the two deals so competitive tension exists?

He is a News Ltd stooge. There is nobody in business who would approach a business negotiation with that thought in the back of their mind and then to proceed to cave in on everything.

Conversely, if you don’t think he is a News Ltd stooge, then he is remarkably naive and dumb and has been absolutely played in the biggest way by Nine and Fox.

Either of those scenarios shows he shouldn’t be in the position.

The whole ‘we’ve got a few things up our sleeves’ also sounds like the biggest buying of time remark you can see.

I don't get it. Are they going to do a deal in two years time or pretty soon, like now?

of course he is, look at how the News press turned on David Smith, John Grant and then Greenberg who was unceremoniously shoved out the back door for V'landy's to supplant him. What was the first order of business when V'landys began? to dismantle the digital arm of the NRL which News and Nine wanted gone. News has sung his praises ever since.

Actually you pinpointed something else inadvertently. He thinks 2027 is two years away - if he is so bad about details and numbers I wonder why we couldn’t get a good deal

My point is, why rush? There's plenty of time. The next deal (2023-2027) hasn't started yet FFS! It also allows potential bidders like Stan and Paramount + to grow their subscriptions and also for someone else to come on the market.

I know what you’re saying, I just thought that bit was funny. It is just deflection from the criticism that he is receiving. If he says this then weak minded people or people that support him will say that there is some all encompassing plan or that this situation is under control.

What other sport takes a hit to benefit their biggest competitor who regardless of what they say would love nothing more than RL to die.
What is his plan other then tying us in with Murdochs new gambling arm. Fantastic for Murdoch and the AFL but what is the plan to grow our sport. Alot of talk but little action.

Links for what? we know the afl deal is $4.5bill of which $4bill plus is cash.
we don’t know the splits but there seems to be an assumption by everyone that telstra is staying at $50mill A year so we can take that out of the $4.5bill. Which leaves $4.15bill. How much of that is contra is unknown.in the last deal it was $16mill ayear. Safe to say in this one it will be significantly more. Will it be more than $40mill a year? Unlikely. That takes it to around $550mill a year cash without telstra, which also links back to the $3.85billion figure that has been mentioned in Number of articles.

undertand or are you still too stupid?
We all seem to comprehend what’s happened except the ones off with the fairies.

Roy Masters article clearly says afl cash deal is better by at least $100m and at best $170m a year. Roy seems to infer his source in NRL says $100m while a conflicting source (most likely AFL or a disgruntled NRL club president etc) says it’s $170m.

So just based off Roy Masters:

At least. At best.
2025 - $100m. $170m
2026 - $100m. $170m
2027 - $100m. $170m

Totals - $300m $510m

Neither $300m nor $510m difference is acceptable for any administration to give its rivals.

Considering the NRL have said nothing in response to AFL deal I’m more inclined to believe the $170m annual cash figure.

If NRL thought AFL’s deal was a lie or not much better than their own, they’d be crowing about it and PVL would be in full on self adulation mode on the Today show etc. The silence is deafening though.

A

A couple of weeks ago I saw Victorians in the comments section of an article threatening to stop watching the game if Saturday games were exclusive to Foxtel. It'll be interesting to see if they follow through with their threat.
They won’t. Most have Kayo or foxtel atm. They’ll just go to the game, a pub or mates place to watch it if they don’t have Kayo/Foxtel.

They are too loyal to their clubs to let this deal make them stop watching. Plenty said the same over the years when South Melbourne moved to Sydney and Fitzroy merged with Brisbane.

It’s all veiled threats. Same as NRL fans that cracked the shits over 6 again or send offs for high shots. We still watch our clubs and the game in general even if we don’t like the product as much.
