What a brain fart! cost hull a possible semi. shame I was hoping for an all hull semi, that would have been massive for the game.

It is rare in an all-action game like rugby league that a moment during a stoppage in play can be so decisive. But if it is St Helens who end up lifting the famous trophy at Wembley come August, how they and Hull FC will look back on Josh Griffin’s moment of madness at half-time in this Challenge Cup quarter-final as being pivotal.

The reigning Super League champions were in a real battle with the scores level at 12-12. You could even have argued the home side were marginal favourites, given how Saints had lost two backs – winger Tommy Makinson and centre Mark Percival – to injury. Which is what makes what happened next even tougher to take for those associated with Hull.

Griffin was initially sent to the sin-bin for dissent, after saying something towards the referee, Chris Kendall. But Griffin did not stop there. He returned to say something else to Kendall and his yellow card was upgraded to red.

Suddenly, a game in which Hull FC had the slight edge was flipped on its head and against a side as good as St Helens, you can not afford to make such costly mistakes. Saints took full advantage after half-time, scoring four tries to Hull’s one to book their place in the semi-finals.

“The discipline cost us – not only in that moment but in other instances,” said Hull’s coach, Tony Smith. “It’s not just on one person. We collectively didn’t win and Saints were that little bit too good.”

An interesting set of 1/4 finals with red cards galore and some hard fought games. Congrats to the part timers York who put up a spirited display against a high flying Leigh.

Venues and broadcast details for the semi-finals of both the Men’s and Women’s Betfred Challenge Cups have been confirmed, with double-headers at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday 22 July and Headingley Stadium, Leeds, on Sunday 23.

On Saturday 22 both Saints teams will be in action at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, following their respective semi-final victories at the weekend. St Helens Women play York Valkyrie (KO 11.45am), while the Men face Leigh Leopards (KO 2.30pm).

And both Wigan Warriors sides are involved in the following day’s (Sunday 23 July) Betfred Challenge Cup double-header at Headingley Stadium, where Warriors Women take on Leeds Rhinos (KO 2.15pm) and the Men play Hull KR (KO 5pm).

All four ties will be covered live by BBC Sport. BBC1 will broadcast Leigh Leopards versus St Helens and Hull KR v Wigan Warriors will be on BBC2, while both Women’s semi-finals will be streamed live on BBCiPlayer. BBC Radio 5Live and regional BBC radio stations will also bring live action from the semi-finals.

Tickets quickly went on sale after this confirmation.

Leigh Leopards are already impressing with 1,000 tickets sold by the club within a day.

Huge demand for tickets
what can be seen as an early advantage for Hull KR, Rovers supporters have once again proven why they are one of, if not the best, fan base in Super League.

The Robins have their Challenge Cup semi-final bout with Wigan Warriors booked in for July 23rd at Leeds Rhinos’ Headingley Stadium. The same venue they beat Warrington Wolves

Exciting weekend ahead. Semis are great imo. Lose and you've got nothing out of it, win and you're in the final.

So hoping for a HKR v Leigh final for a change!
Id have rated Rovers as no chance on recent form but beating an in form leeds at Headingly last weekend has give me a glimmer of hope. Wigan attack looks deadly down the left, going to have to defend and scramble like hell.
Leigh are riding a wave of success and that self belief may just cause a Sheffield level upset!
