Good to see a RMC club signing a high profile player. There were very few ex NRL players going around at the start of the season. Hills really need to lift their standard too date if they are to be any chance.

Lorenzo Mulitalo, who has been playing for Mounties all season, got a run with Parramatta in NSW Cup last week. Similarly, Steve Tavita, who has been playing for St Marys all season, has been picked to debut with Penrith tomorrow. Hayden Budd, a rooster who has been playing for Glebe, is 19th man for Collegians in Mojo Cup tomorrow.

The big win to the Silktails today by 42-14 puts huge pressure on Hills. The Silktails are now in 5th spot on points differential and Hills have already had their 2nd bye. With Silktails powerful under their climate and 3 home games to come it looks like it could be a blanket finish for 3rd to 6th place.

St Marys had to repel challenges from Brothers in both grades yesterday, In SS, St Marys pushed their 12-8 half time advantage to 22-8 in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza, before Brothers struck back to grab a 24-22 lead with 12 to go. With the clock running down, Kaleb Farr scored in the 77th minute to continue the Green's ascendancy.

It was a different story in RMC where the two sides were never far apart with an exchange of tries all the way. St Marys 5th try in the 63rd minute gave them a 2 point advantage and it wasnt till 2 minutes from the end that they closed out the game.

Today, Mounties looked pumped up, popping passes all over the place and scored first but Ryde Eastwood steadied and were looking like they would consolidate the result when Zac Mackay decided to react to some niggle with a head butt. As the Mounties player was binned the 13 on 12 situation only applied for the last 15 minutes. Mounties made 2 huge beaks but on each occasion Goodman kicked away possession. Bench hooker, Adam Risk, took an intercept when Mounties looked like scoring and he made some good steals from dummy half that settled the situation.

I dont know if having Jimmy the Jet in the Hills team required the club to play 6 SS players of whether there was no left after Norths had to call up several - Jamon Wormleaton who was in SS last game played his first NSW Cup game in 2023 (and scored 2 tries). Similarly, Hill's top tryscorer, Logan Aldridge was 18th man for Norths, while Matt French, who has been going well for Hills, has switched to Souths. Jerry Key went from being prop in RMC to playing centre for Norths and Phillip Makatoa and Ben Seufale also went from RMC to Norths.

Wenty's flogged Hills and it looks like the Bulls have a strong chance of going from Premiers to out of the 5 in one season. Norths have fallen from 1st to 4th in NSW Cup after 3 consecutive losses.

The crucial game for Cabra to make the top 5 comes next week, when they meet Mounties, who are 3 points behind and have an inferior points differential. This assumes that the point falsely given to Cabra in the system when Moorebank beat them, is not in official records.

Eastwood RU is going to relocate to Castle Hill and the local residents are fighting against proposals to build medium density housing on the 3 fields. The NSWRL set up their desk right on the fence next to stand so when the first try was scored in SS in the 10th minute and it was recorded as scored in the 30th, enquiries were put to the operator on the desk. His response was "we have been instructed to look at the clock and punch that into the ipad and that is what I am doing"

The first games recorded correctly in RMC/SS were on 21 May and there have now been 4 SS and 3 RMC games so recorded. I note that the junior reps finished on 29 May, so I would speculate that this operator may have come over from junior reps and does not need to blindly follow imprecise instructions on how to record the game.

The Penrith A Grade has had 39 games in 8 rounds. 28 games have been recorded correctly, 7 games did not record any times and only 4 games had the typical RMC/SS nonsense.

Interesting to note that the mercy rule applies even in A Grade and Glenmore Park have failed to last the 80 minutes in 5 of their 10 games. The worst effort was when the 50 point margin was achieved after 52 minutes, while a few others have reached 77 minutes but the goal kickers were not allowed to attempt the conversion as the game terminated when the try was scored.

I am glad someone thinks it is of value but sadly the numbers involved in this forum have declined just as the population of players and clubs continue long term decline at all levels except the professional and the womens game. In 2016 there were 13 teams in RMC and 14 teams in SS.

Call me an old fart, but I can remember when most districts has strong A and A Reserve competitions. Birchgrove Oval would host large crowds every Sunday and there was a Business House competition ( mostly Hotel sponsored teams) playing at Wentworth Park, again large crowds and you could even have a bet. Pathways to 1st grade was through 3rd then Reserve Grade. Today, if a player hasn't made it to an NRL Club by age 21, they generally are lost to the game. Maybe, we should look to Queensland to to see what they are doing, as their 2nd and 3rd tier competitions seem to be progressing well.

Pathways to 1st grade was through 3rd then Reserve Grade. Today, if a player hasn't made it to an NRL Club by age 21, they generally are lost to the game. Maybe, we should look to Queensland to to see what they are doing, as their 2nd and 3rd tier competitions seem to be progressing well.

In the late 90's, St Clair won its first A Grade premiership with 3 ex NZ internationals in the team and a club would be doing well if it made the semis with less than 3 or 4 ex 1st Graders in the team.

Do you have any more info on this Business Houses comp at Wentworth Park - era, teams etc?. I know of the City Houses competition that started in 1919, peaked in 1923 with 28 teams in 3 grades and then after hibernating during WW2 lasted until 1950. It got going again in 1958 but reporting fell away in 1970's, however, there were still 16 teams in 2 divisions in 1994. The teams at that stage were the Banks, Newspapers, Water Board, Maritime Services, David Jones, OPSM etc rather than pubs. The Sydney Deaf had a team for many years, and I imagine the AJC had a lot of little guys. Also a WSBH comp started in 1947 and went to late 1990's after which their grounds (Norford Park, Sefton) was used in Tertiary, RMC and junior reps for a while.

Qantas were in the business house comp in the domain in the 90s as well.

What is interesting is I keep hearing about clubs wanting to come/return to SS and RM (usually starting in SS first).

Spoke to my uncle, now 89 years old, and he said his mate played for Bing and Swing, Other than that he couldn't add much more. My best recollection was that games were played on 3 fields located between the rail (now light rail) viaduct and the Greyhound track. Dressing sheds and amenities were located under the arches.

Bing & Swing were a strong club and their founder had a radio program so Bing Crosby was the club's patron. They won the Balmain A grade in 1949 & 1950, they were right up there the following season but lost the semi to Leichhardt Wanderers. The next 2 seasons were tough going but they were premiers again in 1954 in their last season. I have seen comments that a number of the players came from the St James Sports Club, Glebe, which was also a powerhouse, winning A Grade titles in 1938, 1940, 1943 and 1946.

In 1951 there were 17 teams in A Grade and by 1954 you had to have teams in all 4 grades to enter the competition so Leichhardt RSL played in the Western Suburbs A Grade for 5 years because they did not have any members under 21. By 1960 the Balmain District was down to 7 senior clubs. The following season they created A Reserve Grade as there were insufficient entries for B Grade. By 1964 there was no A or B Grade and the few clubs remaining spilt between Norths, Wests and Newtown. B Grade returned in 1965 but there was no A Grade comp until 1984.
