Tuivasa-Sheck is coming home​

Former captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is re-joining the One New Zealand Warriors in 2024 after signing a three-year contract to the end of the 2026 NRL season.
The One New Zealand Warriors granted Tuivasa-Sheck’s request for an early release to switch to rugby union late in the 2021 season but the club has today announced his return to rugby league for a second term with his hometown club.

“It’s hugely exciting knowing Roger is coming back to us, back to his home at Mount Smart Stadium,” said One New Zealand Warriors CEO Cameron George.
“When he went to rugby union he did so knowing he was always welcome back here if he wished to return to rugby league. We couldn’t be more delighted it’s happening.
“He’s popular with the players and a real fan favourite. It’s going to be so good seeing him back in our jersey.”
When Tuivasa-Sheck switched to rugby union he had made 111 appearances for the Warriors from 2016-2021 with his career tally standing at 195 games. He had also played 20 Tests for the Kiwis.

When he went to rugby union he did so knowing he was always welcome back here if he wished to return to rugby league. We couldn’t be more delighted it’s happening.

“Roger is such a high-quality person and leader who will add another layer to our squad with his enthusiasm, experience, skill and professionalism,” said Andrew McFadden, the club’s general manager recruitment, pathways and development.
“He’ll be a tremendous mentor for our younger players while he’ll also bring in a fresh perspective after spending time in rugby union.”
One New Zealand Warriors head coach Andrew Webster is looking forward to renewing his relationship with Tuivasa-Sheck.
“Roger came to the club in my second season as an assistant coach in 2016 and he had a huge impact on the squad,” said Webster.
“That first year was cut short by his ACL injury but it was brilliant working with him. I’m super excited knowing he’s coming back to the club.”
George said the club won’t be adding further comment to the signing announcement to enable Tuivasa-Sheck to focus on his rugby union commitments for the rest of the year.

• In 2021 Tuivasa-Sheck became only the second player after Simon Mannering to lead the One New Zealand Warriors in 100 matches.
• He was the first Warriors player to win the coveted Dally M Medal in 2018 and he was honoured with the top international player award – the Golden Boot – in 2019.
• He is the only player to win the One New Zealand Warriors’ player of the year accolade in three consecutive seasons (2017, 2018 and 2019).
• Tuivasa-Sheck’s switch to rugby union saw him make his Test debut for the All Blacks last year before adding two more appearances.

Gonna be interesting to see how CHT fits into the squad and what that means for the other halves- we’ve now got Volkmann, TMM, and CHT until 2025, Metcalf until 2024, and you’d assumed me SJ will likely sign for another year. That’s 5 gunning for two positions unless someone is moving to centre or 13.

Agree, but gap from prems to NSW Cup is big. Seems to take a player a few games to get up to speed. Metcalfe long injury lay off as well. But have to say that Berry was better this week than the game before the bye. The more exposure we can give the extended squad, the better.

That wasn’t specifically a diss of metcalf - more an observance that we’re right at the limits of our first grade spine options right now. Whatever depth we currently have is being used, if CHT was fit and available we’d be using him.

Egan and Leiataua signed to end of 2025 season​

Senior first grader Wayde Egan and rookie Ali Leiataua have both signed contract extensions keeping them at the One New Zealand Warriors until the end of the 2025 NRL season.
Egan (26), who was signed until 2024, has followed up his 100th career milestone match against the Eels on Saturday night by adding another season to his contract to extend his time with the club to six seasons.

The 20-year-old Leiataua, who became Warrior #282 when he debuted against Canberra on June 9, has signed a two-year contract which will see him join the club’s full-time NRL squad from next season.
“Wayde and Ali come from different ends of the scale in terms of experience but both play key roles in our plans for the future,” said general manager recruitment, pathways and development Andrew McFadden.
“Wayde provides so much to the team and the squad with his ability and leadership while Ali lived up to expectations with his NRL debut against the Raiders.”
Egan joined the One New Zealand Warriors from Penrith in 2020 while Leiataua, nephew of rugby league legend Ali Lauitiiti, has progressed through the pathways since first coming into the club’s system as a 14-year-old.

“Wayde is a hugely influential player for us,” said One New Zealand Warriors head coach Andrew Webster.
“He is a real leader while his ability and decision making on the field is critical to the way we perform.

“In Ali we see a centre of special quality and he emphasised that with his debut when he did a brilliant job marking Jarrod Croker on what was such a big night in Canberra.”
Egan became Warrior #240 when he made his club debut against Newcastle in 2020. In 13 appearances this year, he has scored five tries (his best for a season to date) while he averages 53 metres and 37 tackles a match.
Due to the team being based in Australia for three seasons, he had to wait until his 51st appearance for the Warriors before playing a home game at Go Media Stadium Mt Smart for the first time last season.

Leiataua was a foundation player in the One New Zealand Warriors’ first SG Ball Cup side in 2020 and has been a standout for the club’s New South Wales side in its return to the competition this season. He has scored nine tries in 13 matches, averaging 136 metres a game with 51 tackles breaks.
In his NRL debut, he was given the task of marking Canberra veteran Jarrod Croker in his 300th milestone game in a charged atmosphere at GIO Stadium. Leiataua handled it superbly making 89 metres from 10 runs with a line break, a line break assist and three tackle breaks plus 18 tackles without a miss and no errors.
