You kiddies are probably too young to remember, but many years ago Gutherson played an origin game and he was completely ineffective and a permanent red line was put through his name.

He wasn't that bad, you might be too young to remember it, but have a look if you can find Justin Hodges Debut in origin, it might provide some perspective as how silly it is to judge a player on one series

Also 3 Lba's and two TA's on debut is pretty effective for a bloke playing out of position. Add to that 124run meters, 32 tackles with 2 missed and I'd say that's a real solid debut.

Ok. I still think there are players ahead of him.

For sure that's arguable, but it's also gonna be very subjective and probably leans more to what is needed from each position given the type of game they wanna play, rather than who's "better".

If we want more running from our fullback then I'd have Edwards ahead of the King, but if we wanted more ball playing, no way you select Edwards over Gutho.

Drinkwater does both.

I remember it well. It was the second ever origin match - back in 1980. Gutho got absolutely crushed by his opposing centre Horace "The Log" McNiven who starred for the Maroons. Scored a couple of tries and made some big defensive plays. Would have gotten man of the Match if it wasnt for Wally Lewis.

He was fine in the centres apart from the one missed tackle that everyone remembers where he got palmed off by Capewell and QLD went on to score.

No one seems to remember Jack Wighton missing about 6 tackles on the other side of the field in that same game though.

Game one, Simple Jack, 10 tackles, 7 missed, 2 ineffective.
