Well one way of thinking about reach is that you have a large number of people flick over onto your program, decide that it's not worth watching, then they watch something else instead.Why using reach not average now

It's basically the potential audience that you could have held for the length of the program but didn't.
Another analogy would be that it's the number of people that go into a particular store out of mild curiosity, enter, look for a brief period and then leave without buying anything. If you can't convert them to sales though, then what does that say about the business?
