I've always thought to create a rep scene, the AFL should run a "World Cup" style tournament every four years (or two, whatever works) with a team from each of the states / territories of Australia (Vic, SA, WA, QLD, NSW, ACT, TAS & NT) and invite two international teams (maybe the finalists of the International Cup held a year prior for example) to make up 10.

It'd give them some reasonably meaningful rep footy and helps the international game grow because it feeds into something bigger.

Anyway, I can't stand the flogs so glad they don't do it.

Ive thought something similar. Combine the old national championships with the amateur level international cup. AFL wont do it though. Clubs, officials and fans on the whole just dont care about rep fixtures.

I'm not so sure the fans don't want it...public perception is a little indifferent but could possibly be due to the amount of disregard AFL origin was historically met with by clubs and players (unavailability) in the past.

More importantly, I'm confident the AFL powerbrokers would love it...due to how much $ and prestige is in the RL version. So why don't they do it?

As an Adelaidian implant for 20 years, and knowing how much the AFL likes to control media narrative and perception...I'd say the main reason we will never see Origin return to AFL is it would squash the perception of it being a 'national game'. They can say NRL is played in 2 states, while AFL is played in all states. Yet, if AFL origin was played, there'd be a top 3 states (#1 Vic, then SA and WA) and the rest would get dismantled. IMO, potential $ would not outweigh public narrative in this instance, and they would lose more than they gain.

Most people dont want it due to player injuries making them unavailable for teams - clubs see it the same way.

What’s the point of this article other than some weird criticism.

For example, Micheal Clarke was number 3 and he hasn’t picked up a cricket bat for over a decade. Do we want players to be googled because of scandals like Clarke had or just generally carrying on like a w*****?

Other people on this list are individual sportsman who aren’t associated with a national team with goes against your comment in any case

The top two most googled are probably only there because of a large global sporting event being held in Australia. Great to see but in another 12 months they might not be top two.

They seem to be getting better through. They need to keep producing more players and nrl clubs should keep signing them and this will eventually lead to higher and higher standards overall…

The last time they made a World Cup final on home soil was 1995. They lost against a weakened Australian team that was missing its Super League players. At the lost World Cup they lost to Samoa in the semi-final.

Great Britain last defeated Australia in a Test match in 2006.

It was, but it's a game England should have won comfortably. I've seen England choke so many times I've lost all faith.

Main reason has been a lack of decent halves - I think they’re starting to filter through now. Forwards they have plenty, backs have been also defensively not the best, however with players like farnsworth etc playing they’ll all just get better.

We should be looking for more Dom Young types - and training them here. Once the NRL gets richer, we should bring in overseas transfer/loans for England, FrancE players etc - I.e. should have 2 academy, JF, Reggie’s players who come on working visas and go back on rotations with SL clubs. In 5-10 years those players will be SL players and they’ll be a lot better
