Eels don’t need to play at Homebush. They have Commbank. It was a great day for rugby league but 5 minutes ago everyone was saying Accor should only be used for grand finals.

Was at the game and it looked like 50k.
They even opened up the upper area behind the posts. People we coming into the stadium up until halftime.
Considering Parra have been rubbish this year that’s an incredible crowd. Stadium would have been 80/20 dogs
If we had a better start to the season that games getting 55-60k

Dogs v eels x2 @homebush
Dogs v tigers x2 @homebush, find a public holiday or even holiday eve to play 1 fixture each year
Dogs v rabbits x2 already set up
Eels v tigers @ homebush easter game, 2 games when eels host easter, in time could be both games at accor when big enough
Rabbits v eels @ homebush with reciprocal rights for indigenous round, started already but needs to build
Rabbits v tigers x2 @ homebush, find a public holiday or regular slot and build from there

With reciprocal rights and at least 1 return fixture on a public holiday we can build these games up and make them all an event and something people want to attend regularly.

NRL crowds are on the upswing. Smart clubs are going to find ways to capitalise on that. Unfortunately Accor is the only stadium of meaningful size in Sydney.

NRL crowds are on the upswing. Smart clubs are going to find ways to capitalise on that. Unfortunately Accor is the only stadium of meaningful size in Sydney.

One of the reasons it’s on the upswing is because we took games away from Accor. Some of you have the memory of a goldfish. Penrith vs Souths like 4 weeks ago? Anyone remember that or am I on a different planet. Yesterday was a public holiday and the first time in 15 years Dogs haven’t been horrendous.

There is literally no reason the Eels should move any games from Commbank. It’s the best ground in Sydney to watch rugby league. If anything our goal should be to sell out Commbank every week and do what the Warriors are doing but that won’t be possible this year because we suck.

Over three weeks away but Broncos vs Penrith in round 18 is about 2200ish from a sell out (including the 1500 restricted view yet to be released).

Looking at some of the sales for this weekend's games:

Newcastle v Penrith is sell really well. Combination of the defending premiers being in town, it being Beanie's for Braincancer round (which is affiliated with the Mark Hughes Foundation) and it looks like it will be a dry match for once in Newcastle this year is seeing tickets selling a lot quicker than usual. Based upon sales so far, I would not be surprised to see this one go close to selling out.

Manly v Dragons is selling strongly at Brookvale as well. Minimal seats left, and supposedly decent sales on the grandstand and concourse. Every game at Brookvale this year where it hasn't rained, has drawn 17K+, and I see no reason for this week's game not to go similar, especially with both teams in form.

Tigers v Titans is selling like a typical day time Leichhardt game. Grandstands are almost sold out, seats around the sideline are almost gone as well, will come down to whether at 3pm on Saturday if the sun is out or not whether it will be 12K or 16K.

Sure, but the code can't rely on public holidays so that it could attract big attendances. Have a look at this weekend. It is "Beanies for Brain Cancer" round. For a great cause, every game should be treated as an event.

Why not though? Public Holidays are already 'events' in people's calendars in the fact they are important and don't happen all the time, anchoring around them, especially having regular fixtures on set dates, helps feed that perception that it is a match worth attending regardless of where on the ladder team's are. (Good Friday & Kings Birthday are great examples of that this year where both teams were in the lower half of the ladder yet still drew above average crowds).

Of course that's not to say that we shouldn't be trying other initiatives to help improve the importance of a match, like Beanies for Brain Cancer round, but we also have to be realistic that it's very hard to make something that happens 10+ times a year at the same venue an 'event' and also appreciate that round based concepts also don't resonate with teams equally (Beanies for Brain Cancer has traditionally worked well for Newcastle, but not other markets, WIL round has traditionally been big for Penrith, but not as big for other clubs).

Still plenty of opportunity for clubs ot create some ongoing event fixtures

ANZA Eve, Kings Birthday eve are obvious ones. Easter Sunday for me is under utilised as well.
