The Game 2024 Draw - venues, home game allocations etc

Can’t say I’m surprised about the NRLs decision to completely put a stop to the Storm-Warriors ANZAC Day tradition, but I’m certainly disappointed.

Would have been happy with seeing the venue shift to a year-on-year rotation.

We tried this in like 2014 with Manly and it fell flat on its arse.

It is a no win situation.

NZ and Melbourne both should host games, to do that they can't play each other

Worst thing about the off season are these stupid hard and easy draw articles.

Souffs, Parra and NQ all very much under achieved. So aren't true bottom 8 sides

I like them rating the Knights draw as one of the easiest despite playing the top 4 a 7/8 possible times and the top 8 a 11/14 possible times which is the equal highest out of the top 8 teams with Storm.

A rival NRL club boss says the Brisbane Broncos have a “rails run’’ that should ensure they are again a lock for a top four spot next season.
The chief executive says it is a draw in name only, and resembles more of a TV schedule that Channel Nine designs to ensure the Broncos remain an NRL powerhouse every year.

The club boss, speaking on the condition of anonymity on Monday afternoon, declared: “They get the rails run every year. It’s all about TV. It is unbelievable.

“Good luck to the Broncos. But it is Channel Nine that does it. Not the Broncos … they should be in the top four every year.”

It comes after the NRL 2024 draw released on Monday revealed the Broncos were again among the big winners in the build-up to next season, although the Sharks, Bulldogs, Dragons and Warriors all have every right to be cheering as well.

The biggest losers appear to be the Melbourne Storm, while Wayne Bennett’s Dolphins have also been dudded during the State of Origin period.

Meanwhile, the Rabbitohs and Eels will also have no excuses after their shock finals absence this season, with the Panthers, Roosters, Raiders, Sea Eagles and Knights also faring well.

But once again, it was the Broncos who had rival club bosses choking on their Cornflakes on Monday morning when the draw was released after being allocated another dream run.

It includes:

• Only ONE five-day turnaround (against the Storm);
• FOUR games with a six-day turnaround;
• EIGHTEEN games with more than a seven-day turnaround (only the Rabbitohs have more with 19);
• TWELVE primetime Thursday/Friday night kickoffs (four on Thursday and eight on Friday), the Storm are next with10;
• FOURTEEN games at Suncorp Stadium and 16 all up in Queensland; and
• Astonishingly, the Broncos also don’t leave Queensland for their final seven rounds of the season.

It’s little wonder the Broncos are $4.50 second favourites for the premiership behind three-time defending champions Penrith ($4).

In fact, the only noticeable blemish on their draw are the teams they play twice, which are either Queensland rivals or fellow powerhouses.

Those include the Roosters, Panthers, Storm, Rabbitohs, Eels, Cowboys, Dolphins and Titans.

As the chief executive chuckled: “Mate, it is not just me. It is other CEOs as well, we laugh about it.

“They get the rails run every year. It’s all about TV.

“Channel Nine has so much power and when the Broncos are winning in Brisbane, the ratings are through the roof.

“That is what it purely comes down to.”

Many believe the only way to make the draw fair would be to have every team play each other once in a shortened season.

Asked if that can ever be the reality, the CEO responded: “No, not realistically.

“And in the Broncos’ defence, it is not their fault. Brisbane is a big market.

“But all I say is this: With all those resources, with the draw that is such an advantage to them, with the massive nursery they have got, a massive sponsorship base, and no one really wants to leave the Broncos, it is very hard to lose a player. They should be in the top four every year.”

While no game is easy for the Tigers on their recent history, they have also gained a relatively friendly start to the season but a horror run home.

But Cameron Ciraldo will be given every opportunity to turn things around after the Bulldogs emerged as one of the big winners.

With Ciraldo certain to enter the new year as arguably the coach under the most pressure, the Dogs have been handed a more than favourable head start with no five-day turnarounds across the entire season.

They also have a great run against the top four teams, only playing the Panthers, Broncos and Storm once.

The big boost for the Dragons will come during the Origin period when they face the Panthers and Broncos without their biggest stars.

Some of the big matches to look forward to include new Sea Eagle Luke Brooks’ round 25 return to Leichhardt, while Titans coach Des Hasler gets his chance for revenge against Manly in round seven on the Gold Coast.

For the Roosters only 10 of their 24 games will be against top eight opposition from this year.

The Eels and Rabbitohs are two other clubs with their destiny well and truly in their own hands after their shock omission from the top eight this season.

Parramatta’s draw overall is probably better than last year although the do face top four teams the Panthers, Broncos and Storm twice.

One club with a reason to feel short-changed is the Storm who face their toughest test to keep their 23-year round one winning record intact when they face the Panthers.

While their backend of the season is also arguably the toughest of any club with four away games in their final five fixtures in a run against the Rabbitohs (A), Panthers (A), Dolphins (H), Cowboys (A) and Broncos (A).

The Dolphins have been dealt a draw blow as the only team to play every pre-Origin round in 2024.

They face the Raiders (R13), Storm (R16) and Rabbitohs (R19) before each Origin match and could be without Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Tom Gilbert, Tom Flegler and potentially Felise Kaufusi from a roster that suffered from a lack of depth in 2023.
Meh, it's all good. Thankfully the NRL recognised many of these issues (that have been happening for 20+ years) and resolved it by introducing a second Brisbane team into the competition.

It's a baseline. Sure it isn't perfect but it's a way to compare each teams draw and all teams are compared using the same parameters. Can you think of a better way?

Why do they need to rate the draw? Just list 5 day turnarounds etc

Because without an even home and away schedule teams and fans will look at the draw and look for advantages or disadvantages. It's good fun to shit-talk about the game. Sure is more interesting than arguing about religion and politics.

What a balls up with the dolphins playing at Suncorp at 5:30 when riverfire starts at 7pm. Obviously no one checked with the Brisbane clubs when the draw was being created

So the AFL has released an opening round draw before round 1, it has both the Queensland teams and NSW teams playing at their home grounds before a full round 1 fixtures the following week. The teams playing in the opening round will receive byes between round 2 to round 6.

The opening round kicks off with Swans vs Melbourne at the SCG on Thursday March 7th.

The Dolphins are up in arms over the 2024 NRL draw with a nightmare Origin schedule, the Magic Round graveyard shift and potential for a Riverfire fiasco leading their concerns.

Wayne Bennett’s Dolphins have hit out at the NRL season schedule after being handed a horror 2024 draw marred by a Battle of Brisbane bungle and State of Origin player drain.

Dolphins chief executive Terry Reader has contacted Queensland government authorities in a bid to work around a scheduling clash thrown up by the release of the NRL’s 2024 premiership draw on Monday.

The Dolphins are up in arms over the NRL draw on several fronts, including:

* Their biggest game of the season – a home derby blockbuster against the Broncos – being locked in on the same night as Brisbane’s annual marquee festival Riverfire, which attracts almost half-a-million locals;

* Being allocated the Sunday night ‘graveyard shift’ for Magic Round – the final game of the gala three-day weekend at Suncorp Stadium, against the Wests Tigers at 6.25pm; and

* Being the only NRL club among the 17 teams to play a premiership match in the lead-up to all three State of Origin games.

The latter scenario means the Dolphins will lose their Maroons stars Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Tom Flegler and Tom Gilbert, who are instantly scratched for club games against Canberra, Melbourne and South Sydney. By comparison, last season’s top-four teams – premiers Penrith, the Storm, Warriors and expansion rivals the Broncos – only have one pre-Origin game each.

The Origin blow will take a significant toll on the Dolphins, who are still in their infancy as a club, entering their second season, and desperately need their big guns on deck to mount a finals challenge.

“Unfortunately, we are the only side in the NRL to play before every Origin game,” Reader said. “We have been given our final bye in round 18, but like all three of our bye weekends, not one of them is before or after any of the Origin games, which is not ideal for our representative players."

“Every draw has its positives and negatives. Our draw is no different, there’s a few challenges for us, but all clubs will have some tough elements to deal with.”

Another headache is the Dolphins penultimate clash of the regular season in round 26 against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

The Battle of Brisbane shapes as Redcliffe’s richest gate of the season, but the 5.30pm kick-off on Saturday, August 31 clashes with the city’s annual gala Riverfire blockbuster – one of Australia’s biggest cultural festivals.

“Our home ‘Battle of Brisbane’ game against the Broncos in Round 26 is on the same night as Riverfire,” Reader said.

“It is something we intend to look at as a positive. We have contacted the Brisbane Festival to investigate what the opportunities might be to integrate the game into the build-up and celebrations around Riverfire.”

The Dolphins were also less than thrilled with being handed the final game of Magic Round against reigning wooden spooners the Tigers.

Reader accepts the NRL has a raft of scheduling demands and says the Dolphins’ draw, while not ideal, is not all doom and gloom.

“For Magic Round we are an away team and have been given the graveyard shift on Sunday night against the Tigers, which is unfortunate for our fans,” Reader said. “It’s a little surprising that we have been drawn in that slot given the Dolphins are a Brisbane team and averaged over 32,000 for our seven home games at Suncorp this year."

“But we do have a fantastic start in round one with a blockbuster Queensland derby against the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon at Suncorp, which is the only game in Brisbane to open the new NRL season. I have no doubt our ‘Phin Fam’ will turn up in force again in 2024.”

On the magic round thing, I get why the NRL has put Dolphins on last on Sunday, it's to keep the highest amount of fans there as long as possible. That is why Broncos, Cowboys and Dolphins are on last over the 3 days. I don't really think there is cause to whinge when you are playing an away game at your home ground.

They definitely have a point with the bye, every team should get at least one bye before an origin game. In fact I would go further and say we should decrease the pre-origin bye slots from 21 to 17 giving every team exactly one bye prior to an origin game. Split it 5-5-7 over the three weekends and then add 2 byes each to two of the post origin weekends which would still give you six games on those weekends.
