I've often wondered but makes sense, the TV ratings are not good and the participation rates are overstated as we know. AFL house propaganda makes it sound way more popular than it is.

NRL is really doing expansion the right way. No billion dollar sink holes, financially stable bids that not only are cost neutral for the NRL but actually add to the value of the comp and, most importantly, we go where there is an appetite for the game.

Competing with rugby league 20 years ago when the scars of super league were fresh is different to competing with rugby league now

Afl had 20 years to solidify top spot and they fluffed it

So glad our game is finally getting some quality rectangular grounds to play out of now. AFL is kissed on the dick because they have cricket to help drive quality stadiums in NRL states.

Union and Soccer virtually do nothing for us. The quality of true rectangular stadiums in Australia is still so poor, improving, but poor.

Is it? it’s taken 30 years longer, our only expansion club is nowhere near the size of the swans or lions, we dont produce first graders anything like the numbers that come out of afl expansion areas and we will still only have two non rl area expansion clubs by the time we’ve gone to 20 clubs. And let’s not get started about South Australia!

Apart from how much invested we fall short in just about every metric in comparison to afl expansion.

Seriously though, their QLD and NSW money pits exist because they have no choice but to try and force people to love their game up here. They are just finding out that they aren't able to brainwash people in the NRL states that AFL is the greatest sport ever invented

They tried their absolute best to take advantage and people just aren't as interested as AFL house want them to be. The TV ratings for Lions and Swans are still poor after all the money, success, exposure and opportunity (handed to them by the SL war).

All they can really say is that they have taken what RU used to have and some disillusioned RL fans in the mid 90s. They won't get another chance like that.

Lions crowds are sub 20k when not at the very top and the Swans mysteriously are always at the top of the ladder so who knows if they can maintain interest if they slide for a few years (evidence from just about every other sports club suggests not).

You are obviously talking about the Storm, and then the WA team as "expansion clubs"
You've conveniently left out the Warriors, a team from another country who have set up where another sport is as just as much a religion as the Vico game is in Vic, SA and WA.
NZ have produced a shit load of juniors across the whole NRL since the Warriors came into the competition.
And please don't say that rugby league has been played there since conception, Aussie rules has been played in both NSW and Qld since forever as well.

No they arent, thats average AFL ratings, not Swans ratings, or even Giants ratings. These are all matches shown in Sydney. Swans rate an average about double this,

But you also have to admit that while NRL HQ has not poured anywhere near the same amount of money and effort into VIC, the Storm have also been near the very top for some 2 decades yet their crowds also hover around 20k. The big question as you noted for the Swans also applies to the Storm, what happens when Bellamy moves on and the Storm has consecutive lean years of missing the semis. Both have established a niche in their market based on sustained success which is the key. An example is the Gold Coast which is rugby league heartland yet for various reasons has failed to deliver onfield success and gone broke several times.

Can I double like a post? Sick of this bullshit that our footprint is inferior. If you look at population centres, ours is much bigger. The challenge for our current administrators is to finally take full advantage of it

Absolutely agree about the Storm, they have the same uphill battle the AFL teams have in NSW and QLD.

I am just happy the NRL is finally making an effort in terms of funding and participation in Victoria and hopefully soon WA. The Swans and Lions have had huge support from AFL for decades.

AFL is in top spot but not by as much as they should be and wanted to be. It is a bit of a fail on their part. The other thing is league has so much stuff it needs to fix up and if it does it could surge to the front.
