It's largely an expat game. AFL is nothing outside of Melbourne and the wasteland states
I've often wondered but makes sense, the TV ratings are not good and the participation rates are overstated as we know. AFL house propaganda makes it sound way more popular than it is.Yep. I went through the 45 man squads and both Swans and Lions have about 10 players from their respective home states. 17%. Rest are mostly Mexican with a few SA, WA and Irish players.
Is it? it’s taken 30 years longer, our only expansion club is nowhere near the size of the swans or lions, we dont produce first graders anything like the numbers that come out of afl expansion areas and we will still only have two non rl area expansion clubs by the time we’ve gone to 20 clubs. And let’s not get started about South Australia!NRL is really doing expansion the right way. No billion dollar sink holes, financially stable bids that not only are cost neutral for the NRL but actually add to the value of the comp and, most importantly, we go where there is an appetite for the game.
I'm talking about the St Peter Vlandy's administration, those that came before him were all muppets. Is it? it’s taken 30 years longer, our only expansion club is nowhere near the size of the swans or lions, we dont produce first graders anything like the numbers that come out of afl expansion areas and we will still only have two non rl area expansion clubs by the time we’ve gone to 20 clubs. Hardly a great sign of expansion ambitions is it?
Apart from how much invested we fall short in just about every metric in comparison to afl expansion.
