What is the value of a PNG viewer vs Aus/NZ viewers in the eyes of advertisers? 10%? 5%? Less? Still would probably make an impact to the broadcast that’s bigger than we originally thought.

I think this question is incorrect.
In PNG we don't get to watch any of the advertisements that are shown in Aust/NZ.
We get to watch advertisement of PNG Companies and products who buy advertising space to be shown during NRL game advert breaks. The company I previously worked used to pay PGK150k per month during the NRL season for our 15 seconds adverts to be shown. And there are usually about 8-10 companies who do this every year.

The real question should be "how much has Digicel paid to the NRL/Fox to screen all 8 NRL games each week plus State of Origin into PNG since the last television rights were sold.
To me Digicel has been making quite a lot of money showing the NRL games as it drives up their subscriptions and also make money from the advertising.

Exactly right
Just like nz has its own tv deal so will png

If they can get one million per game it would more than double our current ratings numbers

Is there any competition to bid against them?

Having just found Out Telstra own digicel in sth pacific (thanks to us hard working tax payers, sweet deal for them that one!) I wonder if that adds value to the Telstra element of the NRL media deal down the track? Presumably a PNG nrl team and more internationals is a driver for digicel profits, ie telstra profits? Then again not sure what the revenue value is of pay tv in a developing nation?

Sweet deal for us too if it helps stop the encroachment of China into the Pacific.

The competition is if they don`t agree to a reasonable price they get nothing, and from the look of those ratings that`s a lot of advertising revenue they will miss out on.

Digicel Pacific - includes Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Nauru, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu - had a total revenue of $715m in 2023-24 according to the Telstra annual report.

Digicel Pacifi c income decreased by 0.6 per cent to $715 million including positive USD foreign exchange impacts. Digicel Pacifi c mobile SIOs increased by 1 per cent driven by Papua New Guinea (PNG) SIO growth. PNG ARPU decreased in Papua New Guinean Kina (PGK) and in AUD. In markets outside PNG, ARPU grew in USD and AUD.

So wait now a png nrl team will be valuable due to the png tv rights ?

Didn’t you say most of them don’t even have tv ?

lol

Thanks for the insight. Yeah I know the advertising would be different. I was more pontificating on discussions relating to the weighting of aggregated viewership numbers. There’s a lot of talk about which comp has more viewers but ultimately there’s also factors to be considered like time viewed and the relative value of ads being played for countries in varying socio economic situations. This kind of thought process gets us a little closer to figuring out where our comp’s deal should compare to others. But of course there’s many other things worth pointing out like what you outlined.

EM TV used have the Rugby League rights from the 1990s up until the last negotiations when Digicel took over it.
EM TV is a free to air channel, but Digicel as already mentioned is pay TV. As soon as they got hold of the NRL they expanded throughout the Country.

Initially we all had to buy Digicel TV black boxes to get the signals into the homes which is still continuing.
But if you don't have a TV at home you can just download the Digicel TV App onto your mobile phone and watch. Thats usually how I watch when I'm not at home.

Yeah was wondering about that, being a poor country Tv penetration maybe be limited, but mobile phones might be completely different, of course the amount that could be charged would be a fraction, but with probably millions of mobile phones throughout the country a small fee would add up.

The opportunity to do this exists now though.

Whilst a new team will no doubt spark further interest, but there is already huge interest in the NRL right now in PNG.

So be keen to understand how much the NRL are generating from PNG media now.
