The last time the ashes was contested in Rugby League. Two fearsome packs went toe to toe in three very hard fought close games.

Australian pack
Shane Webcke, Danny Buderus, Robbie Kearns, Steve Simpson, Craig Fitzgibbon, Luke Ricketson.
Subs: Petero Civoniceva, Willie Mason, Trent Waterhouse, Darren Smith

GB Pack
Stuart Fielden, Terry Newton, Adrian Morley, Jamie Peacock, Andy Farell, Mike Forshaw
Subs: Barrie McDermott, Kevin Sinfield, Gareth Ellis

Lets not forget that outstanding backline containing Phil Bailey and Shannon Hegarty lol

Tour was

France 10 - 34 Australia Att 7,800 (Carcassonne)
GB 18- 22 Australia Att 24,600 (Wigan)
GB 20 - 23 Australia Att 22,100 (Hull)
GB 12 - 18 Australia Att 24,100 (Hudds)
Some very close games but England always finds a way to lose on the buzzer lol

Hopefully France get a game on this tour, although I think they’ll be busy playing WC qualifiers.

lets hope 2025 has close games and crowds closer to 40k

International rugby league road map: Kenya, South Africa bid for 2030 World Cup, Kangaroo Tour returns

International rugby league “lost its way”, but it is back in a big way with the return of an iconic tour and a bid to take the World Cup to Africa as part of a five-year strategy. SEE THE PLAN.

Rugby league’s international push is set to continue with the likes of Kenya, South Africa and the US formally submitting bids to host the 2030 World Cup.

An Australian Ashes tour of England for later this year has also been confirmed as a highlight of the International Rugby League’s road map of fixtures for the next five years.

It also includes five countries bidding for the 2030 tournament with rugby league keen to explore a new market.
Australia and Papua New Guinea will host the 2026 World Cup and PNG has again put up its hand to back up again in 2030 – three years after the PNG side comes into the NRL.

PNG, Kenya, South Africa, US and New Zealand want to host the 2030 World Cup.

While keen to grow the game, the International Rugby League is wary of non-traditional markets after it was burnt by France’s decision to pull out of hosting duties for the World Cup, which was scheduled for this year.

Crucially, each bid country must have government support.

France, Kenya, New Zealand and PNG are also bidding for the 2028 women’s World Cup and England, US and France want to host the 2029 World Cup.

The International Rugby League now has 60 member nations and a new world series qualification tournament meant there were more international matches last year than ever before.

“I couldn’t be more grateful for the thousands of volunteers worldwide that make the playing of rugby league possible globally,” international rugby league chairman Troy Grant said. “The board are united and working well with amazing contributions from Peter V’landys on the back of the NRL’s brilliant Vegas initiative giving international rugby league the breath of fresh air it needed after it lost its way.

“There’s no more mickey mouse stuff occurring or ad hoc fixtures occurring.

“All aspects of the game are improving player welfare and professionalism from nations is giving clubs more confidence. Better communication and a clearer calendar has also helped.

“There’s always more to do and more to improve but it’s tracking nicely a far cry from five years ago when quite frankly three new independent directors walked into a tuck shop operation.”

The return of the Ashes Tour for the first time in more than 20 years is a coup. There hasn’t been a full Kangaroo Tour since 1994, although Australia embarked on shortened tours in 2001 and 2003.

However, with the Kangaroos touring the UK later this year, it means they will not be defending their Pacific Championships crown. Instead, New Zealand, Samoa and 2024 finalists Tonga will contest the event, and Fiji, PNG and Cook Islands will again compete in the Pacific Bowl tournament.

The hopeful World Cup bidders will be considered at an International Rugby League meeting next month.

2028 2029 back to back female WC? and no dates or staduims or even a French game being announced? Sounds like the status quo.

But they are playing for the Ashes Cup (which they have been since 1928)

I mean, it’s an encouraging article, but who wrote it?

I’ve not come across any sort of plan or announcement in any other outlet? Be good to see some confirmation of ‘Ashes’ series with venues and tix on sale in March.

Why would there be concurrent WRLWC? Absolute lunacy..

Kenya hosting 2030 is a pipe dream. SA not so much IF it’s Government funded and supported otherwise it’ll make RLWC 2000 (and possibly RLWC 2026 ) look like a success

In between that Australia will have a B&IRL this year and a RUWC for ‘27

We have 2 International ruling bodies in the IRL
and Peter Vlandys (forget about facades like NRL and ARLC lol)

Basically our International game is totally stuffed until 2028..

Strange take
we have an ashes series for first time in two decades and a pacific cup this year, and a RLWC next year. If you're not excited by that then what more do you want?

2027 is where it all gets murky again, given we couldn't even sort out 2024 fixtures until early 2024 (Samoa to UK) do we even know whats happening after 2026 for the main nations?

Mal Meninga reveals plans for Kangaroos tour overhaul, with five games and a Dubai training camp

Australia’s Kangaroos could revive its famous yet lost tradition of playing a midweek game against an English club side during this year’s anticipated European tour.

Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has revealed his unique Kangaroo tour plan which would include an old-fashioned midweek club game, an additional Test against France and a historic training camp in Dubai.

With a three-Test Ashes series against England locked in, Meninga now harbours a five-match wish list which involves a Wednesday game against a Super League club team.

Meninga will talk with NRL management about his squad visiting the multimillion dollar sporting facilities in the United Arab Emirates en route to England.

Playing a midweek game against a club would revive memories of previous Kangaroo tours, who played Wednesday games against local English sides.

“It would be a throwback to the great old Kangaroo days,” said former Kangaroos captain Max Krilich.

Meninga said the Kangaroos could possibly play the Super League or Challenge Cup champions.

“Playing against a club side would offer tribalism and you’d fill the stadium. There would be a lot of interest from clubs over there wanting to play us,” Meninga said.

“There would be a carrot there not only for the Kangaroos but also for the club side, who wouldn’t have experienced anything like this before. The clubs and owners over there could pitch for the game.”

A midweek game could prompt a ten-day turnaround between Tests. Australian players who contested midweek club games on previous tours were dubbed The Emus.

The proposed Test against the French, to be played in the Catalans region, would help build the game in France.
“Having spoken to the players, we’d love to build into the schedule a Test against France before the Ashes series,” Meninga said.

“There could also be an opportunity for a three-day camp in Dubai, if it fits into the schedule. It’s a possibility. The Australian cricket team did some preparations (for the Sri Lankan tour) by spending time in Dubai.

“A visit to Dubai would give the players a great life experience. It would be a great reward for being selected. I understand the facilities over there are second-to-none.

“It would be part of the offering we could provide for the national team. That’s my wish list but I haven’t yet spoken to the powers-that-be. It’s all on the table, it just needs to be discussed, but these are my thoughts.”

A five-game tour would also allow Meninga to give every squad member a game.

Australian players Ben Hunt, Bradman Best and Reece Robson were chosen in Australia’s Pacific Nations series late last year but overlooked for all three games.

“I want all players to play a game. We want to give everyone on the tour to put on the green and gold jersey and to press their claims. You also never know when you’re going to get injuries and you can’t beat match fitness. We could take a squad of 21, 22 players,” Meninga said.

“If you’re not playing, you do lose your passion and interest. By playing other games, it would enhance the whole experience.

“A Test match against the French would be ideal, to keep that candle burning. France is really important for the international game.”

The Kangaroos could leave Australia around a fortnight after the NRL grand final.

“MERSEYSIDE DATE FOR ASHES
The venues for the end-of-season Ashes series between Australia and England will be announced later this week.
We’re hearing that the new stadium of Premier League club Everton will host one of the games. The other two Test matches will be played at Wembley Stadium in London and Headingley in Leeds.”

Great choices except headingly not Elland rd

Other option could’ve been old Trafford

They better not play like their women did though
