I love when people just say stuff and hope it's right and nobody will check.

The Chargers folded in 1998. Brisbane hosted the Warriors at Carrara attracting 15,813 (from memory the ground held 20-21k at the time).

Titans were announced in April 2005.

They neither "bought fixtures" nor "packed out" the venue.
OK mate, I wasn't expecting semantics.
Between GC , CC and Wellington were all bidding for a team in 2005 I think. The gold coast " held " games at Carrara that had massive attendances. It was a deliberate effort to showcase that we are the one's that are ready for a team.
I know because I lived on the GC ,bought and read the Bulitin every day and attended those games.
And I'm talking about the Titans of course.

I used to attend the the Seagulls games when I was a kid because I got a card that gave me and my mates free entry because we played footy.
When they became the Chargers, it was good because I could ride my bike to the game , the stadium wasn't as good though but they use to let us on the field at full time.

All the point was....
Is if you want a team, getting a good attendance is putting your right foot foward.

Anyway, whatever.

"I wasn't expecting semantics" 😂

You're on a rugby league forum, talking with nerds, in a crowd thread. Welcome to the world.

Here's some more semantics!

As was already pointed out, the Titans were awarded the licence in April 2005. Precisely ONE game was played on the Gold Coast between the Chargers folding and the Titans being handed the licence.

The "huge attendances" (one 16k, one 21k) over 2005 and 2006 occured after the Titans were already granted said licence. They capitalised on the excitement of already being admitted (and Canterbury having a strong following in SEQ).

Absolutely.

And if you think attracting 31,347 for a double header is somehow bad, perhaps go back and look at my previous posts where I've pointed out the standalone home crowds the Sharks-Manly and Souths-Cowboys fixtures have attracted in Sydney over the last 5-6 years. Yeah, it's down on previous but it wasn't shocking by any means. And Perth already has a good track record of strong crowds for NRL and Origin, both at Optus and HBF. They'll have no problem filling HBF once they're admitted.

Perth had an opportunity to show overwhelming support for the game.
Something that made people pay attention.
THIS IS DURING NEGOTIATIONS.
A big crowd that writes headlines forces the NRL'S hand, puts pressure on the NRL. Everyone, saying. Look at this outstanding attendance! We MUST give them a team!
We didn't get that.
We got meh...

Massively missed opportunity.

As for the GC , say what you want. I was there .

Goes to how much Perth paid to get the game over but any Stadium 40% full looks terrible
I think the crowd was just where Cook wanted it. If it was big crowd, then it would push the case for the hbf stadium upgrade, too small and the NRL overlooks WA.

They probably could have got 50k if Cook and the WA fan group went on a media campaign to mobilise a crowd to protest for inclusion.
Instead, went for the protest via mediocre crowd...dumbest shit eva.

You expect and hope there are more RL fans over there than 30k.

Yes the week hasn't been the best from PR stand point but it was one of the few chances RL fans had to watch a live game locally.

If that is me. I am there for that reason

What NRL does well is the 'event' games.

Club games for the part crowds are meh

This thread is full of posts stating what the Good Crowd will be.

ANZAC Day we are looking at 50k and 45k crowds.

Magic Round will sell out.

Vegas was 40k+

So where will this double header fall on that table of event games.

Even the ones it does beat like Easter Monday, that is due to capacity. As opposed to having an event with a Stadium less than half full.

You are looking at it in isolation not comparing it to the event games

I think they could have mobilised a far better crowd but instead choose the excuses option.

WA would of paid to get a crowd across from the East. I know a few times I have gone to NRL.com an ad has popped up.

So you have Tourists in that figure too if not then it is fail and will bring future bidding into doubt

Being a similar event to last year, you generally aim to grow the event like we're doing with Vegas. Letting a decline creep in is very dangerous. A poultry crowd with a poor atmosphere will turn away people possibly returning the following year and even more so if there’s a decline because it promises to even worse than the poor atmosphere they witnessed.

I don't expect the 'home' teams would of taken less to move a game than last year.

Flights certainly aren't cheaper from the NRL point of view.

So if you go backwards crowd wise it follows down

Perth crowd was actually really good considering factors:
1. All the talk about nrl trying to screw WA and likely pulling out of a WA expansion team, would’ve detracted people from coming for sure
2. There are two other nrl events coming soon including an Origin. Total 3 separate nrl events, unlike other years where it’s been one or another
3. The scheduling of the games was a poor should’ve been later in the day
4. GWS or Suns couldn’t even get 30k after 12-15 years, let alone getting that before they even had a team

It's a strange event when the big argument for an NRL team is the added timeslot...I don't think anyone was thinking 1pm lol
We could have played 4pm and 6pm today WA time( 6 and 8pm eastern) and we could have played the Thursday Dolphins vs Pathers at 4pm today.
How does the dumb shit get past NRL HQ.
