Everyone in NSW wants to put him up on a pedestal as one the greats of all time but he just isn't that, not yet anyway imo.
But he's still the best Australian halfback, hands down and still only young.
Penrith has the best attacking structure I've ever seen, ever. Feels like we're asking the wrong question: why can't Cleary play as well outside this structure?
We should be asking :
Why doesn't the state and country have better attacking structure?
Yep Cleary is perfect for the Penrith system.
At rep level Cleary at various times has been outperformed by Moses, Luai, DCE, Munster & Dearden when it comes to taking the game by the scruff of the neck and getting the team over the line. Moses and Dearden particularly have shown this the last couple of years, they got their opportunity in the 7 jersey and owned it, all the while Cleary is still waiting for that Origin moment after years and years.
NSW have tried to play Penrith ball at times because of the amount of (ex or current) Panthers in the side and it hasn't worked. QLD is better than a club side.
And also, you aren't going build the Australian side around Cleary when the names I mentioned above can just slot in and adapt to the team (it is a team sport after all).
Cleary is a great player, the problem is, the NSW media have been hyping him up as the next Andrew Johns since he was 19, he's just not, he's more of a better version of Mitch Pearce, solid player, but not someone who's going to own Origin or the Australian side.
