Well, it was looking like a massive flogging but they kept it respectable, losing by only 10. Not that the scoreline matters at all.

Hopefully, no injuries. Havili had to be taken off, hopefully it's nothing.

I thought Mamo and Dodd were disappointing but better for the run.

I though Fletcher, while he did little in attack, did a lot of tough tackling and was very solid. Our outside backs were outmatched yet we hung in there.

Great to clear the cobwebs and get the season underway.

im going to be abit of a negative nancy but after watching yesterdays trial i thought they were atrocious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no Nrl Team would pick up any of those players other then a handful!

1. Jye Gray- probably our best player you always know what your going to get from him, Bennet has to find a spot for him, i would play him as our super sub like Melb was doing with Sua Faalogo.

6. Ashton Ward- not much of him but another off season will be better for it, one of our best also. Took us by surprise, could well come into contention as our starting half in the next year or 2. Reminds me of a young Luke Keary!

7. Matt Humphries- only 18 years old was playing sg for the last 2 weeks. Has a great future once again might be our long term half. Defended well, kicked well, other then 1 kick but top bright young half.

8. Keppie- played well was impressed.

13. Hubner- tried hard in a forward pack that was clearly dominated, but was the only one trying to do something, does not shy away from the hard work.

Disappointed List.

2. Talanoa Peniatani-had no idea in defence as a winger, a centre being converted to winger, will need a year in reserve grade to be able to understand defence as a winger.

3. Tass- terrible, didnt even know if he was playing or not. Will need to improve or will be playing reserve grade.

7. Dodd- ABSOLUTE SHITHOUSE !!!!!!!!!!, if they are pinning him as our half that was a terrible first grade performance, even in a team with a forward pack that was dominated all he had to do was kick but couldnt even put bombs up that were competeable, ILIAS 2.0!!!!!!! i would turn him into a hooker or ship him back to UK

9. Mamazolous- got hooked, absolutly a joke, release him or confine him to reserve grade. Better go hard after that Brandon Smith

10. Moale- got through abit of work, but ever notice has almost No PCM, no impact in his runs or defence. Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane.

11. Flethcher- has the frame to really fill out and look like a footballer but still, a kid, defended well but will need a season in reserve grade playing against men, another pre-season build his body up.

12. Max Mcarthy- didnt notice him do 1 thing.

14. Nazerath Taua- does not look like a footballer at all, Gumpy, shit hands, how do our recruitment team even have a job!!! hope Bennet has cleared the out.

Just a trial match. Blow out the cobwebs and get the feel of real game experience again after many months simulating and practicing.

Many of these players thrown together yesterday had not played with each other or even trained much together. Casey just joined us a few weeks ago and Ward I'd never heard of or even seen in training photos so he may be an even newer recruit. Both did well but also missed a fair bit too. Lehmann? Never heard of him either. Nickname has to be "Boof" doesn't it?

That's what trials are for. Practice and acclimatisation.

The Charity Shield is a bit more than just a trial - it's a dress rehearsal - at least in the 1st half.

I thought the way the team fought back to make it respectable when it appeared the flood gates had opened was admirable by the way, not that the score line really matters. Some other trial matches ended in heavy score lines. The boys spared us the same ignominy.

Ryan Gray deserves a chance to start. He has a rugged attitude and probably needs to lift his work rate especially in defense but he looks a likely A Grade type.
Back off on Dodd until we see more, especially with better players around him. I was holidaying around Avoca/Shelley Beach for a week and it has been very humid and warm. Good for a surf but not for Englishmen [or other] playing football.
Re Tass, Tatola, Graham et al. Demetriou almost destroyed the roster with incorrect training programmes and inept coaching, one could see the squad was gasping after 20 mins. These men will take a little time to rectify that problem and overcome their serious long lay offs. Impossible to judge on one BODGY game under serious heat.

I will reserve my judgement on Dodd - I think Charity Shield, with the 1st graders will show a bit more to him. As it was said above, the heat and players around him wouldn't have helped his cause.
That Ward kid looks to have a bright future in him, thoroughly enjoyed his performance.
