We almost evened up the possession stats by FT as it was 55-45% to the Dragons at HT but ended up 51-49%. Much of that evening up would have been in the final 10-15 or so where we moved the ball around much more which seemed to get us down field better and ran the Dragons ragged in the heat who were out on their feet. That's when we pounced with tries to Cody and Keppie off a beautiful no-look short ball close to the line from Mamo who deserves a heap of praise for his best game yet in our 1st grade side.
Both teams completed at 81% in sweaty and draining conditions which is pretty bloody good I reckon. All the attacking and defensive stats favoured Saints, most notably offloads were 13-1 their way. Only the kick stats favoured us and kept us in it along with our dogged scramble and determined fight.
One stat that surprised me given the draining conditions is that St George-Illawarra only used 7 of their 8 interchanges. Whaaaaat?
Outstanding players stats -
- Jye Gray's metres run has been updated to 313!!!! from 29 runs with 75 post contact metres. Sensational! Got us going with that penalty try in another great performance.
- Sean Keppie played 64 minutes, ran for 144 metres from 14 runs and scored the match-tying try and made 40 tackles with a high 90% efficiency rating
- Mamo made 38 tackles at 90% efficiency, ran 8 times for 50 metres, made a line break and scored a try, had a line break and try assist for Keppie's crucial try - also 1 error.
- Jamie Humphreys ran 8 times for 75 metres, made 26 tackles, missed 3 for an 86% efficiency rate, kicked 18 times in general play for an updated 647 metres, had 1 line break assist and 1 try assist, 1 error (kicked out on the full because was too flat with poor kick set-up play) and 1 handling error, kicked 4 from 4 and, of course, kicked the winning field goal with his only attempt as cool as a cucumber in the dying minutes to ice the game.
We have found ourselves a halfback! Our 7 & 9 comprehensively outplayed their Dragons counterparts, whatsy and whosey.
