Cabramatta Leagues Club have withdrawn their teams from the Ron Massey and Sydney Shield competitions after just two rounds.

The Two Blues - who only just returned to Ron Massey after a multi-year absence - were undefeated in both competitions but pulled the pin due to funding issues.

The move has devastated the young players from both teams, who are now unlikely to be able to play for any other club and have to sit out the 2025 season.

"It's disgraceful - how can they just allow this to happen," one angry parent told Wide World of Sports.

"These kids trained their butts off all summer and started the season in great form. Now their teams have just been dissolved - they are devastated.

"Surely the NRL or a sponsor can come in and save them."

The club put out a statement on social media explaining the decision on Wednesday.

"At board level, the decision was made in August 2024, that the Cabra Leagues Two Blues would only be approved to enter into Ron Massey and Sydney Shield on the proviso that both teams were fully funded through sponsorships," the statement said.

"The senior football committee presented a business model for the 2025 competition to the board of Cabramatta Rugby League Club which relied heavily on sponsorship.

"Unfortunately, they did not achieve the outcome that was presented, and agreements was signed without Cabramatta Rugby League Club authority and proceeded to compete resulting in two matches played.

"Therefore, with a heavy heart, from the decision in August 2024, funding was not secured and Cabramatta Rugby League Club Board is not going to put the club at financial risk and is not entering into the Ron Massey and Sydney Shield Competitions."

Withdrawal of Ron Massey and Sydney Shield Football Competitions.

At Board level, the decision was made in August 2024, that the Cabra Leagues Two Blues would only be approved to enter into the Ron Massey and Sydney Shield Competitions on the proviso that both teams were fully funded through sponsorships.

The Senior football committee presented a business model for the 2025 competition to the Board of Cabramatta Rugby League Club which relied heavily on sponsorship. Unfortunately, they did not achieve the outcome that was presented, and agreements was signed without Cabramatta Rugby Leagues Club authority and proceeded to compete resulting in two (2) matches played.

Therefore, with a heavy heart, from the decision in August 2024, funding was not secured and Cabramatta Rugby League Club Board is not going to put the Club at financial risk and is not entering into the Ron Massey and Sydney Shield Competitions of 2025.

The Cabramatta Leagues Club has negligible profits for about 10 years. A few years ago there was a takeover offer on the table with $1 million per annum available, with half of that to go to Massey/SS football but the leagues club members voted against it. The Club was established to promote RL but its current members have no interest in RL.

An absolute disgrace.
Pathetic by the licenced club to neglect RL. I remember through covid they cancelled all their teams which was also a poor decision.
Its also not the first time that the club Football and Licensed have let the players down by not getting their act together. Its also hard for a couple of individuals that have worked hard

This is a business decision, and the club is accountable to all its members, not just the football ones. It’s unfortunate, and I genuinely feel for the players, but the league needs to justify the financial burden it places on clubs. Two board members are directly involved, including the football coach—so don’t tell me they weren’t aware of this.

They don’t care about the members; their focus is solely on the perceived prestige of being in the competition. That’s why they’ve worked so hard to undermine anyone who challenged them. What you’ve done—while a tough call—was the right choice to protect the club’s financial future. It was an honourable decision, no matter how difficult.

They had nearly seven months to secure sponsorship to cover the team’s costs, yet they failed to do so. They shouldn’t have even played in Round 1, knowing they couldn’t afford it. Instead, they went ahead, created their own problems, and left the club president to take the fall. He’s a football person himself but did the right thing, while the other two act as if they had no involvement.

That is perfectly valid but shouldnt you change the name of the club to Parramatta Gambling and Drinking Club and drop the Leagues pretence. I remember the 80's when the Club had to pay its gambling tax every month to stay in business. It came out of that but the current rut seems that have one outcome.

It's a rugby league club for both juniors and seniors. The club has been struggling for the last decade therefore due to their non participation in senior comps. It cost cost to $500,000 to run 2 teams. Plain and simple the football administration was told that They can have teams participating if they can find there own sponsor as the club isn't funding it.

Well written and completely agree, I find it extremely difficult to believe that the board, including the head coach who is on the board, had no knowledge of the lack of funding.

Also, it definitely seems that the club president has been hung out to dry in this situation and it would not surprise me at all if the head coach is involved in letting the president take the fall. This is the same guy who, for Cabras 2018 RMC GF qualifier vs St Marys, completely dropped the club/RMC captain from the side (who had been one of the most consistent players all year and was in the starting side the previous finals match they won over Mounties) in order to keep his own son in the team.

It is a real shame for the players who trained a whole preseason and put in all that time and effort and now have to find another club. However, at the end of the day the board only have themselves to blame.
Also feel a bit for the president for having to make this call and having his name dragged through the mud on social media for it.

Yes the coach is on the board and yes the club captain played all year and the coach gave his son the starting hooker and also to everyone's surprise won player of the year. Now all this had happened the president of the board gets the blame.
