AFL won't be too bothered by this year. Their metrics are still very strong and have shown growth too. And their tv revenue streams are locked in for 6 more years.

If their revenue begins to stall or go backwards from crowds, ex-TV revenue or some exogenous shock, as they are adding a team, then they will get worried.

If the NRL begins to match ex-TV revenue and starts to take sponsors from AFL due to eyeballs, that would worry them too.

But right now, they got beaten by a couple of lengths in a race after years of winning it. Always next year. NRL can't rest on its laurels, needs to continue growing.

Don’t think that’ll be an issue with St Peter running the show .
From what I’ve seen of him in Racing & RL he doesn’t believe in resting .

They’re worried enough to push out the chairman of the commission.

Agree, Ive said this on twitter. By any measure the AFL had a reasonable year. Ratings and crowds showed either marginal improvement or held steady. Revenue keeps rising. Ratings and revenue the league remains the dominant force in the country. And they had a huge rise in tv rights revenue this year.

It just the NRL had an absolutely stellar year on all measures, drastically improving on crowds and ratings, and improving on revenues. This is driving headlines and making AFL media types - and guys like me - wonder just what the AFL will do to drive the same kind of hype the NRL has - and if its not too late.

Its to late alright, wait another 50 years b4 catch up to the NRL thats if youre lucky that is

If the NRL can launch a comeback from where it was, its never too late for an AFL that is - despite improvements from the NRL - ahead on most measures, bar tv ratings.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that the AFL has anything to worry about, they literally never will.
NRL and AFL are 2 completely different things, the growth of the NRL in Victoria and the growth of AFL in Queensland is the result mostly of people being different and liking different things. Cool thing about this generation coming through is that there's a lot less peer pressure and they're doing what they want.
The fact that the NRL is growing rapidly is fun to point out to AFL fans because they've been running a narrative that the NRL is a small niche sport in decline/ crisis for as long as I can remember. So it's fun when it's becoming obvious that it's just the opposite. And really fun when you look at numbers that say those same people might be tuning in to watch the forbidden game lol

I have nothing against AFL in the same way I have nothing against netball, whatever makes people happy.
The vibe of AFL put me off, the tone that the commentary talks in is weird and I can't relate to it, they score constantly which kinda takes the edge off it when they do, the cut sleeves and cringe team songs, dudes wearing headbands, the sound of their sirens, the whistle every 2 seconds to acknowledge they didn't drop it, the people who talk about it pre and post game I find unrelatable, they don't seem like real people, the throw in looks lame, the bounce..uhh there's no real structure to it, just a whole bunch of random shit going on like a roulette wheel till finally it goes through the correct posts, the some does a weird thing with their hands..
I feel like I need a shower just talking about it.

Im happy for them to be doing well and enjoying what they enjoy but it's not for me.

By the time afl get worried it will be too late

The giants and suns have been a huge disaster

The tv ratings In nsw and wld are awful

Meanwhile nrl has added dolphins Pert bears and png with a good chance nz2 rounds out the 20

Nrl can conceivably go to 24 teams too whilst afl is struggling to find players and fans for 18

Nrl is obviously a better sport and more likely for new fans not in traditional markets to like

Nz and the pacific will never take to afl whilst they have with league which is now just about the dominant code except for Fiji

Afl has been focused only on Australia and that’s been its downfall even more so half of Australia doesn’t really care for it either
