I still remember when vic.tards used to whinge when the nrl would play two different games every Friday night tailored to qld & nsw… somehow I think if the nrl returned to that and started flogging them even more in the ratings they would take issue with it again.

So afl is providing how many hours of game broadcast per round on Fox if games are on same time and other games overlap? If none of them overlap/run same time then it would be roughly 24 hours a week compared to the NRL, 16 hours, where every game has an individual broadcast slot. If we include fta it’s another 6 hours per week for NRL, not sure how afl fta works. Wookie might know the answer to these questions.

Haha Fumble again having to use the double header approach to match the NRL ratings.

It'd be like if NRL scheduled Broncos vs Cowboys in QLD and then Bulldogs vs Parra in NSW, may as well do a third game too like Storm vs Warriors into VIC. Imagine NRL did all that... and just barely got the same viewing figures as a single AFL game.

Would that be seen as a win? I don't think so.

The AFL has 9 games per round (excluding bye rounds). At 3 hours per broadcast that's 27 hours of content. If two games clash, two different channels are used. (FOX Footy 504 and FOX Sports 503).

The current broadcast deal provides for 3.5 games on average per round on FTA.
This includes:
Thursday Night 7.30pm game
Friday Night 7.30pm game
Sunday Afternoon 3pm game
Additional marquee games (ANZAC Day, ANZAC Eve, King's Birthday, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 6-7 Sunday night games)

Plus guaranteed local market games for NSW, QLD, SA, WA teams which may replace one of the above "national" games if there is a timeslot clash. These are live except on Saturdays in the first 10 rounds where they are delayed up to 2 hours to allow Foxtel an exclusively live Super Saturday.

It's nothing to do with the NRL, it's about giving local teams maximum FTA exposure in their local markets.
The NRL would be wise to do the same with all Perth Bears games live on FTA into WA to give them exposure to the biggest possible audience.

AFL games run for 3 hours as opposed to NRL's 2 so it's harder to schedule stand-alone timeslots for every game. Usually the start times are staggered by 1-2 hours so you get to watch part of each game. Not many fans will watch every single game in a round: Usually most watch Thursday night, Friday night and their own team plus any other games of specific interest.
