Sydney will never run out they just rezone more units and increase densities

places like box hill are new suburbs with high densities
Yeah but we were talking about sprawl, all Australian cities could double or triple their populations by increasing density as our current urban densities are very low.

Well Sydney will then join with Gosford and Wollongong

that would take hundreds of years with current migration rates

major cities will never run out of land

But it won’t for reasons I’ve already stated
There are geographical barriers between Sydney and those places that can’t be built over so they’re not going to merge.

Melbourne and Geelong WILL probably eventually merge though as will Brisbane and the GC

It’s actually a good thing that Sydney has natural barriers that will force it to build up instead of out. Suburban sprawl is abysmal.
apparently Perth has the worst sprawl in the country. NIMBY's won't allow medium-high density living over there and if you look at in on a map it's insane how far the city stretches from north to south - 92km!, that is much longer than Sydney in any direction.

Yeah north to south , east is basically ignored..
Infill is happening though, slowly.
