I suspect this might be the case. Anything more significant would have been leaked by now.

There are no secrets in Rugby League
The more people there are that know about something, the more chance of a leak.

If the meeting tomorrow increases the number of people that know the plan (or even the general direction), then there's gonna be a pretty good chance it'll spill out to the media.

The challenge is whether V'Landys "front foots" things and gets messaging out ASAP after the meeting to head off leaks, whether he "stays mum" to develop things a little further, OR (now here's the crazy - extremely crazy - conspiracy path) actually SEEDS the rumours or creates a leak himself to guage reaction before officially announcing anything.

If V'landys wants a big media rights deal from 2028, then Perth has to be team 18.

“We’re really committed to working with the NRL in growing the competition, and Queensland is a big part of that. We think there’s room for another team here in Queensland, and the Dolphins have been the perfect example.

“The more games we can get played featuring Queensland teams in Southeast Queensland, the better. The engagement in rugby league here is just next level, and the energy of the crowds has a material impact on the quality of the broadcasts that we make. It helps create atmosphere, it makes the commentary team rise, it makes the production team rise.”

NRL need to have team 18 locked in before they start negotiations for the 2028 tv deal. Presuming they are wanting to do that end of this year/beginning of next then they have to have a decision by then. Abdo originally said the decision would be made in October. This meeting could well just be a sounding out meeting.

Yeah Brisbane 3 will happen. Probably around the time of the Brisbane Olympics and fit right in with the media rights cycle from possibly 2033-2037??

From 2028-2032, it is all about nine games a week with Perth coming in. And from 2033-2037, there's a third Brisbane team, second NZ or PNG team and ten games a week.

It would be unfair on the Dolphins to only have a handful of years to establish themselves in the top tier, whilst the Broncos had a monopoly for well over three decades.

I'm happy with Perth as the 18th team. Provided the WA Gov redevelop as the western grandstand at PRS and builds a high performance training centre for the club.

NZ2 isn't getting much support from the NZ Gov.

It’s great that you’ve posted that yet again. It’s very potato!

We've heard so much from the Bears, so it would be nice to hear from the WA Govt and see what their plans are for a club based in Perth.

I agree. I wouldn’t be surprised if tomorrow is the beginning of endless media speculation dominating the media cycle for the next 4 months. Our competitors would hate it which is why Vlandys would do it.

If it is Perth, then in terms of crude footprint we'll be just about where we were in 1995 again - when Auckland, North Queensland, Brisbane 2 (Crushers, now remedied by adding the Dolphins), and Perth (Reds, hopefully remedied by the upcoming team 18) were added.

That's 30ish years to get back to that state. Mind boggling really - and just highlights the hidden cost of the Superleague war - TIME that was wasted.
We're already there. Sydney somewhat rationalised and the pain of it behind us. Gold Coast is back, Brisbane 2 is back and we have a strong Melbourne team which is a bigger and harder market to crack than Perth. Thank God we at least got the storm out of the.SL war.

Fair point, and I was meaning in terms of "restoring the class of 1995" (or the closest we have to that, accepting the Dolphins are a different model to the Crushers)

Still, 30 or so years just to achieve some Sydney rationalization (including a half-Illawarra half Sydney JV), replacing the Crushers with the NRL branch of a heritage BRL side & adding Melbourne (which will basically be the difference between the 1995 ARL competition line-up and the first year of Perth if they're team 18) seems pretty slow progress.
