26 June expansion meeting (Predictions?)

A little more detail/speculation about the outcomes and purpose of the meeting today, no direct quotes from the nrl.

[They are expected to emerge from that meeting to call for expressions of interest from consortiums interested in being part of expansion – it is understood as many as 11 parties are waiting in the wings.]

[The return of a team in Perth and the addition of a side in Port Moresby are considered formalities, although they will need to go through the process and meet the criteria that the NRL will finalise on Wednesday.

That criteria is expected to call for consortiums to show how their addition to the competition will strengthen pathways, grow the game and appeal to broadcasters.

A final decision is expected to be made in September in the lead-up to the grand final, once the NRL and the ARL Commission have had time to digest the bid proposals and consult with clubs, players and broadcasters.]

In saying this, I hope PR gets a WA team, he was somehow involved with the WA Reds about 12-15 years ago until the ARLC at the time announced the Pirates and then made it clear there was no expansion happening soon. Pre-2013 PR was very positive

I recall he spat the dummy big time when the Titans got the nod over Perth which was a long time prior to 2013 … he has been a pretty negative, one agenda crusader in his 20 years here ..

Hope he lightens up now that the journey has apparently come to an end ..

11 parties waiting in the wings shows how healthy the game is. People want in.

Obviously all 11 may not be viable but it's positive.
Off the top of my head I can think of...
(In no specific order)

Known bids

1 PNG
2 WA's NRL Bid (Pirates)
3 The Bears (which may join forces with number 2, or whoever else will entertain them.
4 South Island NRL Bid (the one linked with Frank Endacott - branding TBC)
5 South Island Kea (Moffatt)
6 Brisbane Easts (was Firehawks, branding TBC)

Possibles:

7 Western Corridor (As per previous Brisbane Bid round)
8 Brisbane Bombers (not sure if they'd re-launch a Bid.. is there any appetite from those involved to go again?)

Then there's places that were putting their hands up before but passed over - Wellington, Central Queensland, Central Coast particularly - which may be outside chances.. maybe just stepping forward to get on the NRL's desk, with a more realistic eye to when we go beyond 20 teams.

Do you really need to play any games at NSO? If you must have 1 or 2 Sydney home games just play them at Allianz - one against Manly and the other either against Souths or Wests. Souths would probably be a better game to have in Perth.
I myself personally couldn’t care less if the Bears don’t play any games at NSO as there are more than enough away games for the Bears in Sydney, NSW.
I’ve already said why have Manly travel 10 mins over the spit bridge to play when the Bears have to travel across the Country from Perth ?. I’d put Manly on a shitty Jetstar flight with no leg room that hopefully gets cremated and then cancelled while the Bears just sit back comfortably waiting for them to arrive in Perth.

My prediction is they'll discuss the establishment of a 2nd division of the NRL. A 2nd division of the NRL would look something like this:

1. Ipswich Jets
2. Central Queensland Capras
3. Townsville Blackhawks
4. Western Clydesdales
5. Eastern Raptors
6. Northern Thunder RLFC
7. South Perth Lions
8. Sunshine Coast Falcons
9. Adelaide Plains Brothers
10. Tuggeranong Bushrangers
11. Illawarra Cutters
12. Mounties RLFC
13. MEC Black Swans
14. Victoria Thunderbolts
15. West Coast Pirates
16. Joondalup Giants
17. Wellington Orcas

Singo has gone into battle mode for the Jets to partner Perth:

Millionaire adman John Singleton has sent a letter to the ARL Commission doubling down on his heavyweight financial support for the return of the Jets on the eve of a crucial meeting where the doors of Rugby League Central are expected to be thrown open to expansion bids.
Singleton told News Corp at the weekend that he was prepared to do “whatever it takes” to see the Jets moniker to top-flight rugby league and he has reiterated his backing of the foundation club as a minority partner in a consortium which would see a team based in Perth.
The Perth consortium, which has the backing of the WA government and potential investor Peter Cumins – the man behind Cash Converters – is at the front of the queue to join the NRL as the 18th team, potentially in 2027.
WA government officials have been in Sydney in recent days, where they have held meetings with Singleton as the iconic ad man pitches for the Jets to be part of a partnership with WA that would see the foundation club revived.

WA officials have also held talks with North Sydney Bears, the preferred partner for the NRL and their broadcast partners given their return would ignite a supporter base that has laid dormant since they were kicked out of the competition.
The WA government’s priority is to go alone but there has been a strong push from the corridors of power at Rugby League Central for the Bears to be brought back as the game eyes off expansion.
WA officials have also met former Parramatta coach Brad Arthur in recent days, having previously held talks with Bulldogs head of football Phil Gould as they look to pick as many brains as possible in the lead to their potential return.
Those meetings have been held as the ARL Commission prepares to meet in Melbourne only hours before the second State of Origin game to discuss their expansion plans and begin outlining a roadmap to 20 teams.
They are expected to emerge from that meeting to call for expressions of interest from consortiums interested in being part of expansion – it is understood as many as 11 parties are waiting in the wings.

The return of a team in Perth and the addition of a side in Port Moresby are considered formalities, although they will need to go through the process and meet the criteria that the NRL will finalise on Wednesday.
That criteria is expected to call for consortiums to show how their addition to the competition will strengthen pathways, grow the game and appeal to broadcasters.
A final decision is expected to be made in September in the lead-up to the grand final, once the NRL and the ARL Commission have had time to digest the bid proposals and consult with clubs, players and broadcasters.
The NRL is intent on bringing the clubs on the expansion journey – they are expected to receive a financial sweetener in return for diluting their share in the ARL Commission by adding as many as three teams over the next decade.
Bid teams will also need to show they have the financial muscle to back a successful team, which makes Singleton’s last-ditch plea potentially decisive given he has deep pockets and a longstanding desire to see the Jets revived in some form.
Money won’t be an issue for the PNG bid either given they will be armed with a $600 million commitment from the federal government, the bulk of which will be spent on pathways in the Pacific and ensuring a team based out of Port Moresby is able to flourish.

Singo doubles down on Jets lifeline as expansion race heats up

Your prediction is very very wrong.... the clubs would never agree to money being taken away for some glorified 2nd div comp, when they are each already running their own reserve grade sides, who are kept in house for their own clubs use.. this goes against every NRL club, it will never be a thing no matter how much you'd like it to be, the best case scenario is that these extra sides are added to the existing nswrl or qrl comps to strengthen them as they are the stakeholders in game also

Fiji is another bidder, so that's 9 going off your list, Newtown Jets with Perth is 10, and some weeks ago they said their was 3 nz2 bidders, that could be the 11th

Good point - with the trend in recent years for Sydney NRL clubs to increasingly bring their reserve grade/2nd tier "in house" under their own brand it's hard to see them just ceding control.

Good calls - and chances are that once we get to 20 & look at adding 21 and 22, then more places like Adelaide and NZ 3, plus (very) rough chances like Northern Territory, Tasmania & Samoa may start to emerge.

Not that I necessarily agree with it but a few of the teams that have a city to themselves don’t play all 12 games in that city. Melbourne, Gold Coast & Warriors are normally the home team for Magic for example, Dolphins in Perth etc.

If the NRL was crafty they could try and mask a Bears/Jets home game in Sydney as part of the proposed “Sydney mini-Magic” idea for Allianz. NSO or Henson Park can have a trial.

Magic Round should be an added round and every team plays 25 games. However when the code expands to 20 teams, it could reduce the rounds. Each team might play 22 games. If you add Magic Round, that's 23 games per club, just like Fumbleball.

I think you can pretty much split it in to 2 groups at this stage.

18-20: Perth, South Island, Brisbane 3 & PNG.

And if and when it ever happens..
21-24: Whoever misses out above + Adelaide, Wellington, Sunshine Coast, CQ, Auckland 2, Melbourne 2, Hamilton, Central Coast & Fiji.

Yep, we've been a bit slower on it than some other codes but we are doing expansion right. Bids knocking the door down to get in, jumping through hoops to prove they can pay their own way and stumping up licence fees. Well done NRL

I’ve been saying for a while I think the home game structure should be evened up again. Either as you suggest make Magic an extra round or the NRL creates another round’s worth of event games and every club goes back to 11 that they have control of plus hosting 1 at an NRL ‘event’.

Either a full rounds worth of double headers scattered through the season or a Country round would do.

We have bids knocking down the door precisely because we've been so slow.

Inadvertently we've had the whole "treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen" scenario play out.
