Couldn't believe it when I saw Guppy named in an article today. Elsewhere in the NZ media Todd Astle is being touted as an opening batting option so nothing should surprise me anymore.
yes, a heavy (but totally unsurprising) loss and much of the media has gone full genius...

Shocking that they never commented on the obviously badly selected (again) squad ahead of time - rather they celebrated Tom Blundell's team spirit and good guy persona - I am sure he is, and he's a very good keeper bat - but Watling is the best in the world, and if hurt Latham can keep at a pinch - surely a bat would be more useful... same with Astle, he's at best mediocre, as is Santner (but is a good all round talent) - Patel is obviously the best spinner in the country, and should be there and have played

And Jeet had a few decent tests a couple of years ago - literally anybody would be better atm, which I guess is why Astle is touted (stupidly)

You need batters you have 2.
Latham, Nicholls and Watling are all ok, collectively aside from Luteru to a degree we were poor...

Raval has to go but there’s nobody in the squad to replace him... Santner needs to be better, as there’s nobody in the squad to replace him... Boult is world class and changes the attack... but also will depend on conditions at the G

I’d say that Boult and Henry have to come in for Melbourne.

Being realistic, to beat Australia, NZ need to bowl us out cheaply so they need to throw their best bowlers at us. Then they have to hope either two of Williamson, Taylor, Latham or Nicholls score big with support from BJ and De Grandhomme.

Boult is a huge plus.

Southee bowled with a lot of guts which surprised me, Wagner did too which didn't.

Like pretty much any team that tours Australia, the spin bowler is rendered a non event here, especially if they're only passable to begin with.

Not sure Boult will make a big difference to the kiwis

Was average 1st innings when NZ beat England in November then broke down in the 2nd innings.

Averages almost 40 vs South Africa and Australia in test cricket

Come boxing day he would not have bowled for 5 weeks

Quality bowler on his day when the conditions suit

Oh FFS

Congrats to Jamieson who's a good cricketer - but Larsen is just geniused, Stead seems so too when it comes to selections - we have Boult, Southee, Wagner,Henry and CDG there so there's no conceivable way he plays... and we have Raval and a back up keeper - so we've either doubled down on Jeet, or we're going to play two keepers???? Against the best pace attack in the world we'll either have Raval, or someone who usually keeps and bats 6-7??? That's a f**king winning strategy if every I've seen one... Mind you, Aussies and Wadey at 5

Just f**k off Larsen

I know it’d be a huge call to move him, since he’s the best keeper/bat in the world, but would shifting Watling to open and bringing Blundell in to keep be an option for NZ? Watling has done a lot of opening in his career and is very technically correct. Raval is just a walking wicket at the moment.

Although if Raval is going to find form anywhere it’ll be on the highway at the MCG.

Additionally, I don’t know what purpose Santner has in the NZ XI on Australian pitches. Can’t score runs, can’t take wickets, can’t keep it tight. You’d be better off playing four quicks and an extra batsman, or better yet putting Will Somerville on a plane to Melbourne because he actually know how to bowl on our decks.

NZ have a 203cm fast bowler and have not been him playing, how the f**k to they expect to get better?

FMD.

Not that bowling is the problem.

Any batters hidden at home?

I am guessing I cannot hang this 'let the Victorian play MCG' who are the selectors these days.

Not what you know, who you know.

Nicholls is presumably another option to open - but 3-7 is our strength, messing with that to fix the cluster f**k selection policies just seems double stupid

You've hit the nail on the head though, not having any batting cover (literally none, Blundell is capable but a specialist keeper) is f**king geniused (and some have been saying that for a while) and Santner while a handy cricketer is a limited overs spinner and a spinner in NZ conditions because they don't take wickets - Astle is not a great option - Somerville at least knows Aust, and Patel is the best spin bowler in NZ

But with Ferguson going down, they had the chance to pick a bat and fix the obvious problem - but they're too stupid to... with Boult, Southee and Wagner fit, they all play, no question... Henry is clearly next - Jamieson will be there as a net bowler only - just dumb - bring him over as a net bowler if that's important and add a top order bat FFS

Jesus this is infuriating...

Then again, I see Siddle's been called up, and you have Wade at #5, so guess you can empathize!

There is no way they’ll play Siddle. Pattinson will surely come in for Hazlewood.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they dropped Head and played Neser at 7 be went with four quicks and Lyon.
