Guptill has never been a test player. Can't believe he actually got a recall, which is why you don't use one day cricket as a guide for test cricket.

Also, well done to Jimmy Anderson, a great achievement.

What is it with winning the toss and fielding over there atm, no one seems to have confidence in their batting line ups.

The pitch had green tinge and at Headingley if you have clouds overhead expect some swing. I think Cook was hoping Anderson would run amok.

Interesting team selection. Shows real concern for the all-rounder if you're taking the gloves off of Watling, who is arguably the best keeper/bat in test cricket right now.
Watling and Anderson both had injuries. Obviously Anderson not fit enough, Watling not fit enough to keep (didnt keep much of the first test).

More forced than interesting

Yep forced. Anderson and Watling hurt, and Neesham already out meant it came down to a keeper playing as a bat or using Rutherford

Will be interesting test this one

knock over buttler, bell, moeen quickly and that extra 50 runs or so yesterday morning is looking more valuable

Geez England take the foot off the throat a lot. I have lost count how many times over the past few years they have let tail-enders rack more runs than they deserve. Should have bowled them out under 300.
Good ton by Lyth and now Cook is England's leading run scorer overtaking Gooch.
Another lapse has left this game wide open. With 350 on the board and the poms battling last at Headingly, NZ have nose in front unless...

New Zealand seamers doing the business this morning. If they can roll Ali quickly now and get through Anderson and Broad first up they could really put the pressure on England.

Wow, from 0/177 to 8/267. Top bowling Southee.

I recall a test a number of years ago (99 IIRC), Windies v New Zealand. I think it was Sherwin Campbell and Robert Samuels putting on 270 for the first wicket, and then losing all the rest of their innings for another 50-60. Seems to be quite similar here.

That was some weird captaincy from McCullum. Southee rips through them, then Broad and Wood start smacking the seamers around.... McCullum for some bizarre reason kept BOult and Southee going for a full hour without changing bowlers while those two went to town. Finally he gives the spinner a chance, first over, wicket. Particularly Boult, he was bowling rubbish but McCullum was quite content for him to be smoked repeatedly to the fence.
