I think Australia will have to bat at least 150 overs to have any chance of a draw, posting a score of at least 400 (450 would be more ideal). The pressure's on them. Luckily, it's still day 3 and the pitch hasn't deteriorated match. We need to take a lesson from how England batted in the 4th test at Nagpur a few months ago.

Minimum of 400 required to give us a chance. The closer we get to 500 the better off we'll be, but I can't see that kind of score happening.

X with his personal best performance in tests..

3/131..

He actually did bowl ok when the game was still a contest, he created that crucial chance that Clarke spilled in the second session yesterday

Maxwell got smashed all around the park in his first 10 overs and it killed the game as a contest

That is the thing with him..

He creates one of those chances every blue moon..

He is a good short form bowler though..

... and Fox are showing highlights of the 2012 grand final AGAIN during the tea break.

Provided that Australia can somehow survive until after tea tomorrow then we will get to see the highlights for a fourth consecutive day.

let the batting collapse commence

The key to the Australian second innings? Application!

Application is desperately missing, Henriques should really be batting at 6 or even 4. But Wade would want dibs for scoring 62, when he should have really scored 162!

We need a couple of our blokes to score big tons, other than Clarke. Warner and Watson seem the most likely, otherwise consider it 2-0

Lets compare our primary spinners 1st innings.

Overs
Lyon 47
Doherty 46.1

Maidens
Lyon 1
Doherty 15

Runs
Lyon 215
Doherty 131

Wickets
Lyon 3
Doherty 3

Economy
Lyon 4.57
Doherty 2.83

And the above includes 2 factors in Lyons favour. He was playing on a far more spin friendly pitch AND he had a much bigger total to defend.

Comparing Lyon and Doherty on this series fairly and logically and you cannot come to the conclusion that Doherty is significantly worse.

Doherty had about as much penetration as Lyon did but Doherty was far more accurate and economical in much harder conditions than Lyon.

Cheap wickets after the damage is done, wonderful. Mind you Starc does that and people around here seem to rate him.

Hopefully our batting can do something different to usual and bat well. Not confident though.

Conclusion.. they both suck

Unless someone from the BCCI has called Indian team management and ordered them to lose their wickets to Maxwell to make the Mumbai Indians look justified in forking out $1 million for him:lol:
I like it.
Anyone else actually dreading us batting for the last session or so today?
i'm only dreading us batting a session.

we won't last 2.

And Dhoni wasn't batting for a declaration when he was destroying Lyon?

X has a better average in this innings while conceding at a much lower rate than Lyon in the 1st innings of the 1st test.

Doesn't compare that unfavourably to Lyon.
i'll type it in big letters for you nitwit - ALL 3 OF OUR SPINNERS ARE RANK SHITE.

If we can be a maximum of 4 or 5 down when we get the deficit erased we are right in this.

Add to that a tail that wags and we could set a target.

Can we trust these stats?

Or is it a bit like you claiming India scored 400-500 every innings against England?

Interesting match I found here where we won after overcoming the largest 1st innings deficit in test history (291 runs):

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/63580.html

That Australian team:

Moody
Taylor
Boon
Jones
M. Waugh
Border
Matthews
Healy
McDermott
Warne
Whitney

That just reminded me that Border batted at 6 despite being our best batsman in that team. I suppose the difference is he didn't have a bunch of inexperienced/shite players in front of him.
