@ Hughes Haters, Hughes has done no worse than Twatto. And Twatto has a nearly equal average over many more tests. Twatto gets dropped before Hughes does.

Hughes first... that's pretty obvious...

Wouldn't be a bad thing if Clarke went cheaply and you are embarrased, that brings it to a head - otherwise he can add some respectability and prolong the careers of some who are not deserving

Gutless, dunno...

Overrated - he has some competition in the current lineup with Hughes

Yeah, that's about right too. This could be a quick kill for the Indians today, Clarkey's due a failure unfortunately

I agree with most of the comment posted in response to this article:

http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-australia-2013/content/story/622914.html

This so-called "long-term plan" has been going on ever since Watson first got his baggy green... there is no doubt that on talent and ability alone Watson deserves a place in the test playing XI, however, apart from his occasional "handy" quick runs and wickets, the role he has played most consistently is as the one player who has made sure that Australia has not been able to have a settled side... he's in the side, may or may not perform, then he's then injured and out again, then automatically walks/limps back into the side again. I'm not saying it's anything it's his or anyone else's fault, but it is what it is. ... even if he played over 3-4 more years, how many of those tests would he be able to play? I remember Callum Ferguson was beginning to cement his place in the odi side and even on the verge of a test call-up not that long ago, gets injured and has to prove himself again.... the NSP have to plan for the future Oz cricket, not Watson's future

Sadly, whilst he has the title 'vc' next to his name, Watson won't be the first head on the chopping block. Like Ponting was able to use the 'c' next to his name as a shield to protect him when he was batting crap, Watson won't be made accountable for his crap performances until he no longer has 'vc' next to his name - then, like Ponting when he lost the captaincy, will he solely be judged on his batting performances (now that he is no longer classified as an all-rounder due to his refusal to bowl).

I've never been a Clarke fan... this series is certainly changing my mind, and a big one in England will just about sew it up - always had doubts about him outside Australia (and his record confirms that)

and on Cowan... at least he's trying to grind away, he's limited, but with the show ponies around him you need someone like that

Ed Cowan reminds me a lot of John Wright, the former New Zealand opening batsman. I believe Wright's strike rate wasn't flattering either (S/R of only 57 in ODIs).

He'll fix that record up in the next few years, not that it's terrible anyway. Just really stands out because he is exceptional in Australia

His average is in free fall at the moment. Watson has played a lot more tests than him so apples and oranges.

Also, you're a f**ktard.

Yeah, probably - I merely meant the very good vs great threshold... regardless of his overall average (about 52) he only averages about 40 outside Aust at the moment, which makes him the mirror image of Jayawardene, who many Aussies criticise

No comparison. Wrighty was a champ. Cowan's a Tasmanian NSW reject chump.

What about Ravi Shrastri? Clearly no edge from Clarke down the leg side, and Shrastri is going off about snicko not picking up a noise because the bat face was closed. No chump stain, there was no snicko because he didn't hit it you goose.
