Best time to play a career saving innings is before you need to play a career saving innings. If we reprieve Ponting and Haddin and Johnson for a couple of 50s and 40 odd then we deserve to remain mediocre and struggling to get into the top 4 sides in the game. A couple of series' of shit followed by a last gasp 50 is not anything like what you need to stay in the test side.
