By extended run, do you mean 21 innings, 456 runs at 21.7 since his great debut hundred? That is 5 and a half series of failure so far. That is a pretty extended run. Now he should have to go actually earn his spot by playing domestic cricket this season.

And McCullum is averaging 5 since his 300 :sarcasm:.

I see your point though, he's been given a decent crack I guess. I could live with someone who's been scoring well in domestic comp to be rewarded with a shot.

His record suggests otherwise. 45 test innings, only 6 50's, 0 centuries, average of 25. His career should be dead in the ditch.

You said you have paid attention to first class cricket, and tbh it shows

Flynn's first class average is 37.5 (not stellar admittedly) with 16 centuries and 21 50s.

I haven't checked, but in the last few years it's pretty good, he's now a more assertive player...

At the end of the day, my argument is simply that first class runs should get you in the side, unless you are a special young talent (there are none of those at the moment, Robbie O'Donnell perhaps in a few years).

Flynn and Papps should have Fulton and Rutherford's slots in the squad - if they can go back to Fulton, they can certainly go back to Flynn and Papps... and Rutherford simply needs to fix some fundamental issues and start scoring runs again

So wait Iafeta, you're fine with bringing Papps back due to his strong domestic form but Flynn doesn't get that same consideration because of his international career (batting mainly at first drop or in the middle order by the way)? Papps averaged something like 15 in his 8-10 match Test career so far. Flynn has done well to make a good conversion into an opener in domestic Cricket so he should be mainly judged on what he has done since doing that

He averaged 43 last season and 47 the season before.

How many innings has Flynn opened in test cricket?? I'm sure someone can find out... He has always said that is his preferred position, yet when playing test cricket he has been put at 3, 4, 5 & 6 more often than not.

I've always said he should get an extended crack at OPENING. He's never been given that opportunity.

And he's matured as a batsman...

Next touring team I'd simply put Papps and Flynn in for Fulton and Rutherford. Latham needs an older head with him imo, and he's the future.
