Well, factor into the account:

1. That first incident
2. The wickets falling in the day
3. Clarke getting hit in the nads and rolling around for 5 mins.

Thats all that I saw (was playing today), so I probably missed more time wasting incidents

About 5 times a bowler was coming in to bowl the ball, close to delivery, when the batsmen backed off

So this along with the sightscreen debacle and the Clarke getting hit in the balls incident adds up to about 3-4 overs

eh?

So 90 overs is for 0/300 scoreline? :sarcasm:
lol you really dont understand?

Batsmen takes a single- realises he might not make it. BAM hits the stumps... third umpire... decision pending... OUT. Walks off field. New Batsmen comes on... all up, that could be 5-6 minutes.

Batsmen gets clean bowled. Walks off, new batsmen takes guard, could be another 2-3 minutes of nothing.

Adds up to overs... and its in the official ICC guidelines for what they take into account.

So I see you are being an ICC appologist furry...make the penalties for not bowling overs severe...25 runs for each missed over!

Lol.

So how about every over, I just back away from the bowler running in and waste time, knowing it'll give me 25 runs for each over they don't bowl?

Fool.

Mate there is no reason why the overs can't be finished by 5:20, let alone 6pm, if the overs are not finished by 6, there is no excuse

Wheres your whinging about Ponting's abysmal over rates in India? Or where he was fined in Brisbane because there were NO delays of any kind?

wickets falling is part of cricket and is not an acceptable excuse for a slow over rate

3 minutes were taken into account. the commentators mention this

if they had bowled 90 overs play would have gone on another 10 minutes. that would make 40 minutes of overtime

Smith must be fined

Ponting was warned and threatned. Dhoni wasn't despte India being just as slow

this is the second time this tour that despite having 30 minutes of overtimethat the Saffers have failed to bowl 90 overs in a day

where is the outrage?

it only seems to exist when its Australia

5-6 mins for a run out?? I doubt they take anywhere near that long, maybe in an odd example, which is hardly making your point convincing. How many times did it happen in this test match?

The batsman has 2 minutes to take guard after a wicket is lost, this is part of the 90 overs of the day, and they can get penalised if they dont make it in this time.

As ED has said, wickets is part of the game, part of the 90 overs, 10 minutes taken into account change over innings

I suggest you check this site out, before trying to look like you know it all by clutching at straws

The only thing stopping sides bowling 90 overs in a day is the will.

Yes it's an extreme case, but Leeds 1948 England bowled 114 overs in a day. That was while Bradman and Morris smashed them all over the park to score 404 to win the test. There was still some time left at the end. Not only that but England were still batting at the start of play. So Australia took 2 wickets, then there was a change of innings, 404/3 in 114 overs and still time. In all they probably could have got 120-125 overs in during 6 hours of play. None of this half hour over time or dispensation for wickets taken. Just getting on with the game, not wandering down from slip to have a chat with the bowler every 3 balls, quick changes between innings.

Yes the game has changed, and yes they bowled more slow bowlers, but no one's asking for 120 overs. Just 90. If the penalty for failing to meet that number was severe enough (for batting teams too who waste time) no one would ever miss it.

Soooooooo.....where are those Clarke bagging idiots?

I wouldn't count myself in the lunatic fringe that has been saying he can't bat, but I have criticised his shot selection when set ... and fair dinkum, if two catches (one a sitter) hadn't been grassed I would be giving it to him this evening.

The first chance was a repeat of his Perth dismissal. The second was late in the day and after Haddin's dismissal. Would have been criminal.

I couldn't agree with the poster who said he batted like an Australian captain. He needs to get control of that mental part of his game before I could say that.

No doubt he has been our most consistent and fluent batsman since India. But has butchered several tons and really hurt the team at times with soft dismissals.

Having said that he is a world class batsman which used to be taken for granted in our top 7 but is increasingly rare... Was probably in the best touch of his summer today too and genuinely saved our innings.

Deserves big wraps but not unqualified ones.

I have never applauded Ponting's over rates. Every team is shocking and heavy measures need to be put in place to ensure it does not happen again. Put a run penalty on each over not bowled and captains will find a way to make sure the overs are bowled!

He probably is, but Hussey is 4 years younger - he's in a slump and can bounce back. Hayden has had slumps before and bounced back, but can anyone really, honestly, see it happening at 37 years of age?

Good to see Clarke continue his good form, from what i saw of Hayden and Hussey they both looked terribly out of form. Hopefully we can build a decent total to bowl at.

Same could be said about Ponting, his previous vice-captain, Steve Waugh, Mark Taylor and Alan Border in their early years as well. Couple of current players suffered and continue to suffer the same ailment.

Notch could almost make an all rounder if he had a forward defense

unfortunately he plays everything from the crease
