3rd Test: India v Australia at Ranchi on Mar 16-20, 2017

Yep, Smith is undoubtedly the best test batsman in the world - the only rival is de Villiers when he plays again (and to be honest I think he's the best all-round bat in the world, still). Kohli, Williamson and Root will all be great in their own right, but there's a gap between them and Smith, he's been astonishingly good for a couple of years now.

Strange to think he was viewed at one point as a spinner whom could bat a bit. Obviously his ability has always been there, how was he never earmarked as a permanent fixture in the top order at Test order when he was averaging over 50 in FC I'll never know.

Root is easily only the 4th best of the young guns IMO. AB is still a freak and when right will probably be back up to 1 or 2.

These are the same people that thought Beer, Derpaty, Quiney and Hastings were test cricketers.

Love this passage from Greg Baum in the Fairfax press today;

Smith tamed India, but in an equally impressive feat, Glenn Maxwell tamed himself. Back in the Test team after three years, the Big Show was content to have an extended run off Broadway. He waited 58 balls to hit a four, and proceeded with passive aggression to play his longest innings in any form of international cricket. For him, instead of ramps, there were cramps, a new sensation and not in the INXS sense. Together, he and Smith put on 150, and they are not done yet.

Credit where credit is due... That was a great knock by Maxwell. looked determined and showed a bit of heart albeit on an easier pitch than what's been served up so far.. if these two can hang around for another session then we are in with a big chance.

Interesting point the commentators mentioned it last night. that's the first time Maxxy has faced 100 balls in any innings for Australia in any format... good time to decide to apply himself.. haha

DeVilliers is 33. Will he play enough Tests to get back up there again?

33 isn't that old for a batsman, I can't see why not??

The guy is just that good.

Yeah, sure...but when a 33 year old is injured for a year, the signs aren't that good. He's not playing right now, obviously.

I've been a Maxy basher for a long time, more out of frustration.

He has always shown glimpses of solid talent then pissed it all away with a dinky ramp shot, or some dumb arse reason to get out.

Yesterday, it was all about patience and application.

IF...

And it's a HUGE IF...

IF...Maxwell can apply himself like this, chime in with a wicket and 5-10 over per innings and field like he does, then I cannot for the life of me see why he cannot make a real fist of #6. Considering some of the other options around there, I just think he could be the one to make a real go of it but as always, I wait and see, hope and pray he keeps his mind set solid and plays well.

Otherwise, the merkin can go on the scrapheap with the rest of the cunnys who've had a shot.

Its not ABdV age thats the issue its his desire to play test cricket. He doesnt really seem that keen to get back playing. He might think well im 33 and i can make a really good living out of being a t20 gun for hire while im still a ludicrously good limited over batsman

Count me in as another who is wishing Maxwell all the best and hoping he makes a good show of it in the test side.

He has been a bit of a wanker over time but quite clearly talented and offers much needed variety in the side. Certainly way better that the hopeless M. Marsh.

Hope he goes on with it today and makes a big tonne.

Is Maxwell willing to put the T20 mercenary circuit aside to play for Test prestige though?

Test cricketers make good money in australia so there really isnt the prestige v money debate here.

But yeah he wants to play test cricket. Its why he played county cricket and was trying to move to nsw when he couldnt get a fair crack in victoria

I once heard Maxy say along of the lines of his dream is to be a long term test cricketer for Aus. He kept mentioning the baggy green.

I remember being shocked when I heard it as I thought he was just a mercenary.

He has the chance to establish himself over his few innings. Mitch Marsh set the bar pretty bloody low. He knows he can do it now.
