Given Australia were 4/140 and it's still only day 1, this Smith-Maxwell partnership could end up being a match-winning partnership. Maxwell has played very well, no T20 flamboyant attitudes. Has already performed much better than Mitchell Marsh did in the previous 2 tests.

I feel Australia need to get to at least 400-450, as batting will become more difficult in their 2nd innings.

In an ideal world, you'd have liked to have lost one less wicket. But in a world where India are very good at cricket in their own backyard, 4/299 is a great day.

I think the pitch will deteriorate pretty rapidly after tomorrow honestly. 350-400 will be an excellent position to be in, anything above that will be outstanding

Given where we were at lunch, I'll take it. Happy to have been proven wrong about Maxwell, he dug in when we needed it. We could have very easily been knocked over shortly after tea for 200-250 and watched India be 0-100 at the close.

Hope Maxie gets his first test century tomorrow, he deserves it. Just gotta knuckle down a bit longer and not do anything rash and he'll get there.

This pitch will fall apart rapidly IMO. I think we just need to focus on these two and Wade getting us to 375-400 if they can, and then from there we can assess the game and maybe have a bit of a dig or look to grind India down a bit more or whatever.

Yeah no point declaring first innings in India unless you've deadset got 600+ . Even ten runs could be crucial in the third and fourth innings
