3rd test: NZ v Pakistan

When you add in his batting he is a very handy cricketer, but some of the comments you hear about him are laughable. Someone even placed him around the same level as Hadlee

No doubt he's a very fine all round cricketer

But reality is beyond making scoring difficult his bowling is relatively ineffective in tests. In recent years his batting (40+) has been good enough to justify a place in a test team...

But I wouldn't necessarily have him in NZ's all time test team - I've alter the rules and have Grimmett

And he's behing all of Hadlee, Reid, Sutcliffe, Turner, Donnelly, Crowe, Cowie, Cairns (C) and possibly others in terms of our greatest test cricketers... and a quick look at our recent test record makes it pretty clear that Shane Bond is far and away our best and most influential cricketer at present

I've never rated Vettori as a test bowler because he's only effective when batsmen are trying to attack him.

His ODI record is decent, and would be better if other teams didn't have a "get what you can off Vettori and plunder the lame seam bowling" tactics that have become common over the years.

Vettori is a smart cricketer and has a lot of heart, but a test batsman who really doesn't want to get out to him, won't get out to him.

Salman Butt must be mortified. Hasn't scored a Test century since 2005. Had a prime opportunity and threw away his wicket to Martin Guptill

Martin Guptil, our next great spinning all rounder. How embarassing for the Pakistan openers after doing such a great job yesterday.

Some disgusting batting from the Pakistan openers this morning. Imran Farhat was down the wicket before the ball was delivered.

Surely Myburgh has to be the next to come in. He averages 45 over 100 odd innings. Find me another batsman in NZ apart from Sinclair with that kind of record.

was going to say Fulton, but apparently his avg is 44! (which might be a touch higher than the Jaapie's anyway)

why not pick Sinclair FFS

Indeed, but things almost always get much worse when we 'bat'
 I love how you put the inverted commas around bat, first innings was not too bad ... New Zealand 'batting' is I a bit of a concern, but I would really start to worry if Pakistan took a lead of 250+

first inning?? Fine, if you rely on a makeshift #6, your keeper and a tailender to score the bulk of your runs!!

Inverted commas deliberate, and NZ's 'batting' is more than a bit of a concern - it's appalling (only thing worse is Pakistan's fielding)... and I don't exempt Taylor from that either, he's been lucky and his shot selection is schoolboyish

I know, but seriously he's far and away the best first class bat in the country...

Sinclair would have to be the the big disappointment in NZ cricket for a long time with all the runs he scored in domestic cricket. I suppose that's the difference between facing 125-130 in FC cricket and facing 140-145 in international cricket.
