I didn't think in my wildest dreams that England would regain the ashes after the pasting we got out here 18 months ago. Add the failures in the Windies and the World cup I was not looking forward to this series.
I won't gloat like others have but I will breath a sigh of relief and enjoy this moment , cause I know we will be put back in our box later this year against Pakistan & South Africa.

If you want to see what the MCG pitch used to be like before drop-ins were introduced during the early '90s, youTube Kim Hughes 100* against the West Indies in the 1981 Boxing Day Test match. In the context of the game, many cricket journos (even Ian Chappell, who despised Hughes) call that one of the best centuries in test cricket history (on an erratic pitch against Holding/Croft/Garner/Roberts). Holding and Lillee both got 10 wicket hauls in that match.

We were 3/8 (sounds familiar :)) when Hughes entered, finished up on 100no (we made 198)

Lillee had them at 4/10 by stumps day 1

That's right. Lillee bowled Richards off the last ball of the first day.

And regarding Hughes 100*, next highest score in that first Australian innings was 21.

that was a brilliant ton from Hughes when you consider the attack he faced and that late spell from DK was equally impressive
