Loved the 80s and early to mid 90s.... in the third ODI, Eoin Morgan got to 40 odd and he hadn't hit one in the middle. He'd hit about 4-5 shots over cover on the charge, each off pretty much the outside edge, each bouncing no less than 10 metres from the rope. Back in the era where competition between bat and ball was intense, each of those shots would have popped up for a simple catch for cover and the batsman would have been laughed off as a goose.

Seriously, these run rates are outrageous. I know all sports evolve, but if we fair dinkum start seeing 400 per day in test cricket I'll chuck it in. People watch sport generally to see a contest. This is just a tee off, how good is your golf swing or baseball swing game. Its seriously boring to watch.

This also makes the big hitters of the previous generation look tame when it shouldn't be the case.

The next generation will look at Gilchrist and Jayasuriya and think "wtf is the big deal, look at Maxwell and Rohit Sharma!". Sehwag used to truck along at nearly a run a ball in test matches when it was largely unheard of.

Their numbers will be less and less impressive looking with this new 'modern' ODI

The one that should always stand out was the great Viv - who in nearly 200 matches averaged 47 at a strike rate of 90... (and both I am sure fell away a bit in his twilight years) when among his peers an average of 35 and SR 65 was good...

The guy was ahead of his time, a prized wicked like no other if you got him out early

Testify!

I wholeheartedly agree.

I have found ODI cricket unwatchable for a long time. Largely because there is no longer a contest between bat and ball. Let's hope that test cricket doesn't go the same way.

It's on the brink.

While it hasn't gotten silly yet, we are seeing more 400 run days and run-a-ball centuries (and doubles). If the game is not looked after right now, it will turn to crap too.

Yeah - for me the two special games at the WC were NZ/RSA and the first NZ/Aust game - opposite ends of the spectrum, but the NZ/Aust game was wonderful, not need for 350+ to entertain...

Does seem like they might as well play on concrete

I thought the Nz/Aus game was poor quality

Lots of players got out to bad shots

Only a demon spell from Starc made the game exciting at the end

Agree they both entertaining and thrilling matches to watch. I don't subscribe to the 20/20 thrash fest.
