ARTHUR J MALLEY WAS THE LEGEND THAT NEVER WAS
Born in Wales in 1890, Arthur James Malley emigrated to Australia in 1904 with his parents Beryl and Donald. At the tender age of 15 Arthur started playing Rugby for St Leonard School Of Hope under the guidance of Senior coach Tom McCabe. The year was 1905.
McCabe was relatively new to Australian shores but recognised great talent when he saw it. His team went through the season undefeated and Malley, just 15 and playing against much older boys, was voted player of the season for the school competition.
By 1906 Malley was team captain and also training with Norths Rugby Club in his spare time. To keep his team interested he devised several training drills which included limited tackles and play the balls. McCabe was impressed with this initiative and jokingly gave it the name Northern Union. He was however excited at the concept of a new game that seemed to be so graceful and regimented. He and Malley spent the next 3 months making improvements to Northern Union and with each passing week the concept was gaining momentum with several Sydney based Clubs.
Tragedy however struck in December 1906 when Malley, on his way to Sydney to demonstrate his new concept was notified his parents were killed in a train crash on holiday in Wales.. Malley immediately left Australia never to return. McCabe continued his legacy and in 1908 the game of Rugby League was born.
