What's there to be an expert on?

Unlike League, soccer has more basic rules so it's pretty easy to become an "expert" AFAIC.

I wouldn't say that, mate - the offside rule in soccer is not as clear-cut as it is in league. And these forums are littered with so-called league 'experts'.

Soccer Rules-

Don't get offside
Don't touch the ball with your hand unless you are the goalie
Don't knock the other bloke over
Kick the ball in the other sides goal and you get a point

Pretty simple game really in essence.

Having never watched it for any reasonable length of time, I wouldn't know, but I assume there is quite a lot of depth in strategy moreso than complicated rules.

It is, but the offside rule has some technicalities in it that confuse even avid fans of the sport.

Like I said, being raised in Europe and South American I am a big soccer fan. I HATE how they carry on to win free kicks, but I love the sheer athleticism and tactics of the sport.

And, much as I love league, you could really say the same of league:

Don't get offside from kicks
Don't miss tackles
Run and put the ball down in the in-goal to score a try

Pretty much the only sport you can't break down so easily is NFL imo.

What I mean by technicalities with the offside...

I'm assuming nobody saw Mexico's opening match (I think it was Mexico). Anyway, a goal was called back for offside despite the fact there was a defender at the goal post because the attacking player was behind the goalkeeper, but in front of the player at the post.

Essentially, the offside line ends with the goalkeeper, so even though there was a defender behind the goalkeeper, and the striker was in behind the goalkeeper but in front of the defender, the player was ruled offside.

It's hard to explain without illustration.

Nah, every team has some show pony with fancy feet. The main objective is to get the ball to him. In defence, you look for the big show pony on the other side and just try to keep him out.

The rule is simple, its the interpretation that gets complicated. Much like the shepherd rule in Rugby League, or even the forward pass rule.

Fair call.

But one thing you raised is a good point - for some reason there are a lot of glory hogs on soccer. You know, the players who want to do it all: take that shot from 30 yards out; dribble past the entire team to score; hog the ball; etc.

Why is that? So many times you see the player take the wrong option and be a glory hog - more so than in any other sport imo.

They want the fame etc, that comes if they pull off the "impossible" eg. Christiano Ronaldo's free kick from outside the box yesterday that nearly went in, it was probably the best chance Portugal had all game.
