I hope it's none of them and that this is a minor transgression greatly inflated by the media. That would surely be the best possible outcome for our club. I like Glenn Duncan and I don't want him painted as the bad guy either.

You run a fish and chips shop and want a discount on the oil removal right?

That is certainly a plausible theory and unless Duncan refutes it, not too hard to believe. I would really like to hear exactly why he stood down rather than just the vague explanation we have on the record so far. Maybe you're right though Old man and he won't reveal the details to save face, who knows?
His position on the board was always an untenable one due to the massive conflict of interest whether he was voted in or not.

I think it'd be highly unprofessional if he revealed the reason for quitting the board. That kind of stuff is always kept behind closed doors. It would damage the club more than it would damage him.

He's already given his reason so clearly you believe Duncan is highly unprofessional.

They won't retract zip. I doubt that they simply made it up. They might be bad journos, but it's not New Idea. They would have an informant who they feel is credible enough to go to print with.

There is chance however that the informant is telling porkies because of his/her agenda or faction.

Man, this whole saga is like a bitter divorce that just won't go away.

Not only that but the SMH hasn't really reported anything sladerous that any retraction is needed.

He said the basics without going into details as he had to say something, but yeah you're right even that was too much. By going into specific details about what is said in boardroom meetings is what would be highly unprofessional.

Yep, they certainly didn't paint Osborne in a bad light last week, eh?

Suity

They certainly didn't but that doesn't mean it's slander. Especially when the main point of topic is Osborne borrowing 30 grand from Spagnolo which he admits to doing. If there was any chance of slander and a retraction there'd be lawyers involved already.

There are lawyers involved already:

Daily Telegraph said:
He also revealed he had engaged prominent lawyer Stuart Littlemore QC to investigate if he has been defamed.

"I'm here to stay," he said of his future as Eels chief executive. "I don't have any intention to leave. I'm comfortable with the support I have at the board level. Anything they've got of a defamatory nature I'll hand to Stuart Littlemore to look at."

They should hire a PI and investigate the matter, then litigate if they find anything. Nah kidding. As if a football club would have a private investigator and a team of lawyers lined up to do stuff like that. :sarcasm:

How do you know? And it would be libelous, not slanderous

This kind of rumour and innuendo happens in regards to every club and you never see retractions. It just happens to be our club who is in the papers at moment. Manly have copped it all year, as have Penrith, Souths, Cronulla, Cowboys, Newcastle, over the past couple of years.

So because other clubs haven't sued in the past, it means no libel has occurred here? Infallible logic

The media need to learn they can't f**king lie about people.

No amount of "it is believed that..." and "sources close to the club said..." and "an unnamed club offical/ex-player/manager said..." is acceptable when this kind of thing can cost people their livelihoods.

Just because idiots want to read this kind of thing in the paper doesn't mean it's right for media outlets to give it to them without knowing the facts.

The media need to be shown that 'freedom of the press' doesn't extend to the freedom to fabricate a story.
