A Contract is a Contract, is a Contract....or is it?

Stanley is no fullback. He isn't quick enough, is suspect under the high ball and one-on-one defence isn't good enough. He is a half.

Nightingale has no vision and poor passing. Everytime he plays fullback his contribution is never what it usually is and our attack never gets out of 2nd gear. He plays his best on the wing.

A big club would never let a rival club pull a swifty like this and let them get away with it. Why should they be able to improve their squad at the expense of ours?

This has gone beyond Moltzen and his mental state. This is about acting like a big club and ensuring we have a 2012 squad that can challenge for the title. We need to come out of this with the better deal. First step is we don't budge with Moltzen. We have the better legal standing here.

I'm not saying we don't need him, I'm on the moltzen band wagon. What I'm saying is we don't need to go alpha club for a player if he doesn't want to play. We are St George, we are better than that. The V bows to no one, but we shouldnt cheapen our jersey if a muppet is not proud to wear it. That would be where we are better than the tigers, who sell half their team for one player looking for a pay day

Nighty is a world class winger. He can fill in at fullback when required, and do a great job. But he's not a full time fullback. Stanley would be the pick if not moltzen.

I dunno why people keep harping on about Stanley to fullback. I have never seen him play there & I think people are just assuming he'd be good there.

No. Moltzen stays for two reasons.

1. We need him for next year whatever sort of potential Cummins has.
2. A big club like St George bites back when a smaller club like Wests squeaks at it. That is how we maintain our status. It is critical for Doust to exert our authority in the NRL. We are not Souths.

When the dust has settled, Moltzen will do the job he is supposed to do. We are a bigger and more successful franchise than Wests who are in that tier with Penrith, Canberra and the Scum of unevenly supported, second rung NSW teams left over from the old days of the Winfield Cup. He will recognise this within two weeks of preseason training.

Telegraph beat up.

Isn't it St George Illawarra? Same number of premierships as the Weststigers? Joint venture operation. For a moment I thought you may be living in the past.

Exactly why we need to keep Moltzen. Not only is Nightingale better on the wing, he has said he doesn't want to play fullback before because he doesn't feel capable.

The Moltzen signing was obviously triggered by the Boyd and Gaz departures, both of which the club was aware of before they went public. As replacements, we went after Wes Naiqama, didn't get him, then "signed" Moltzen, but now look like losing him also.

After coming up empty handed, you would think we would still be cashed up enough to target someone else of note in the next several months.....

Did you not see our games this year v Parra round 8 and v Cowboys round 9 (after Bronx got injured)? Two of our better wins of the year btw

stanley is actually very good under the high ball and has solid defence - hence why bennett was comfortable enough for him to play dummy half/hooker for matches this season coming off the bench.
in the modern game your fullback basically acts as a second five eighth in attack - and i think kyle stanley having played a lot of five eighth would slot into fullback quite easily

Style was reliable at fullback when asked to fill in
His one on one tackling is good enough but not head on near the line. He's an old fashioned legs tackler and this allows a quick play so can be problematic from a cover defence perspective (IE not allowing sufficient numbers of our players to get back onside after opposition breaks)

Can't rate him under pressure under the high ball as we haven't seen enough but he was safe enough catching the ball from uncontested bombs

I'm really having trouble working out if he's fast or not. He's certainly innovative and intuitive and can finish well in scrappy play situations

Yeah, I agree with all of this & you made a really good point re Stanley's tackling technique. One of Darius Boyd's biggest ( and often overlooked ) assets is his defence near the line. He's strong like Slater & especially in 2010 was outstanding in this area.

- Style is too injury-prone to play fullback at this stage of his career, we need someone made of rubber.

- I personally think Hornby at fullback would be fine, as he is at halfback, hes missing speed, but he is an excelent defender and tonnes of heart plus a kicking game.

- Like everyone else said, Nightingale needs to stay on the wing, he is outstanding there, lets not break 2 positions to fix 1.

- Cummins has plenty of momentum, but the kid is still young right? I dont see him in any junior rep sides, how far is he from beign ready for the serious hits of the NRL?

- And finally, we actually need a Plan B to cover injuries, if we miss Moltzen we are going to be really cutting it fine, 1 serious injury and we are in disarray.

If you can't rate him under pressure under the high ball because you haven't seen enough then you can't rate his on line defense either because you haven't seen enough. Do you really think he would try to tackle a guy around the legs near the line? I doubt he would be that stupid.

I have seen him run in open space and he is deceptively quick. Kinda like Inglis, Hodges and Ken Nagas in the old days. They don't look like they are traveling very fast but they always seem to have enough pace to beat the defence.

Thats a good point, missing out on Moltzen not only means fullback issues, it means halfback issues too..

There are a few options that could play at 7, but none are fantastic choices.. and again we will be very thin on depth. No young halfbacks at the club that can step up?

Cagey Mac uses a lot of big words, but pretty much has no idea what he's on about.

Style is an outstanding defender. I must be watching a different game.
