A Draft?

Would never work as it would give no incentive for clubs to develop their own juniors. The only way it could remotely work is for players who graduate from U20s without being signed. But if they're not being signed out of U20s a draft probably isn't going to help them.

It encourages tanking, fails to reward NRL clubs that assist in junior development, forcibly relocates young teens across country which has a personal impact and discourages local juniors from getting to play with their local NRL club.

I'd rather see NRL clubs rewarded when they're proactive in developing juniors. And for the clubs that have smaller junior areas, stop whinging. There's plenty of area both in regional Australia and overseas that are untapped. Those clubs want the talent, they just don't want to do the hard work for it.

That would be the only worthwhile scenario, to showcase fringe players. So maybe a small draft when a play is forced out of the Under 20s because of age.

But every teenager being forced into a draft? No thanks.

It always gets me thinking and wondering if we could do the same thing in the NRL get the the best like 100 junior league players(17-19 year olds) together in the country and put them through a skills camp etc etc like they do in the AFL.

Then obviously the worst performing teams from the previous season get the top picks.

Anyone else think this could work?

I just don't see a benefit to it. If it ain't broke an all that.

Local juniors beoming local heroes is a big selling point for families deciding which sport to let their kids play.

It would stop for one from all you guys from sydney saying that Broncos always get the best juniors from qld rubbish...

They don't, clearly the best QLD juniors are playing for Melbourne, NQ and Manly (Cronk, Smith, Slater, Thurston, DCE, Ballin, Scott).

Thats one huge bonus the NRL is that a kid growing up in Canberra can aspire to play for the Raiders etc.

Nah, it rewards the shit teams and teams like Manly, Melbourne would be punished for their success by having no access to quality young players.

Not for me.

My son will be playing in the wests junior league and be f**ked if I want him to play for the tigers. Rather him play for the Sharks.

I agree with pretty much everything you've said but not every league that uses a draft has problems with tanking, and while tanking occurs in the NHL, NBA and WNBA there are no tanks rolling through the CFL, NFL, MLB, MLS, MLL, NLL or the KHL

That's a seperate issue though. If he is good enough to be considered and the Tigers offer him a deal he's not forced to do it. He can always say no.

However if he's put into a draft he may get forced to play for a club he doesn't want to.

Yep if anything the lack of draft is the best thing for your son as he can choose.

Sounds like a lot like GI actually.........
