From the SMH:

Looking at the speed and swerve of Nathan Hindmarsh's departure, it seemed there was nothing wrong with his knee. But looks are deceptive. Hindmarsh hot-footed it to his four-wheel drive, beating cameramen and photographers, and sped off, furious at being ruled out of the Tri-Nations tour by the team doctor, who reckoned he would be sidelined for at least a further three to four weeks.

St George Illawarra's barnstorming 20-year-old Ben Creagh was the surprise replacement, receiving the news while he lay on a couch watching a movie and recuperating from his team's week-long, season-ending celebrations. He will now miss the club's trip to Cairns, but noted "none of my mates, and certainly not me, is worried about that".

But in a feisty first official training session at Erskineville yesterday there were other concerns.

Mark Gasnier was worried about the speculation by his manager, who had been pumping up his Dragons' contract price by suggesting interest from the Australian Rugby Union and possible 2007 World Cup intentions.

Coach Wayne Bennett was worried at the audacity of a television journalist who dared to suggest the value of the Australian jersey was being undermined by giving it to Willie Mason - who admitted minutes earlier that he was not 100 per cent fit and his ankle wouldn't be totally healed until he had completed a full off-season of training.

And then there was St George Illawarra captain Trent Barrett, seemingly pretending he wasn't worried that there were pivots galore in the team and his best shot at playing for Australia might be out in the centres.

Gasnier said he had not received a formal offer from rugby union, "but if they have got something to say, I'll listen". He said his possible switch of codes was speculation but if he had to he would make a quick decision "because I don't want my teammates distracted because of me".

Bennett said he would talk to Gasnier to ensure the fleet-footed centre was focused entirely on the upcoming Tri-Nations series and not on his contract deals.

But Bennett was tetchy at the former Easts player and television reporter Russell Fairfax and rebuked him for asking a question about Mason's selection devaluing the Australian jersey. Mason had got the nod while other forwards, including grand finalists John Skandalis and Steve Southern were left out.

"I was very lucky to have made the side," Mason admitted. "I was picked because the last couple of years I played well [for Australia] and they showed me a little bit of loyalty."

Bennett defended the selection of Mason, who played just nine games at the tail end of the season in the Bulldogs team that failed to make the finals.

He said Mason might have lost some mobility after tearing his ankle ligaments "but that just means he is back to the level everyone else is at". "If we thought it would be a gamble, we would not take him," Bennett said.

Mason said his ankle, injured last November while playing for Australia against the US in Philadelphia, was "not 100 per cent".

He said he had been treating the injury carefully since his return in the July 10 match against the Warriors and had not been able to complete a full training session and was restricted to doing low-impact work. Barrett said he was prepared to play any position to get in the starting line-up, as there was a logjam of players within the 23-man squad pushing for the halfback and five-eighth positions, including captain Darren Lockyer and Andrew Johns.

"Everyone is very competitive, we all want to make the team … if I train well and the form of the last three or four months is good enough to be in there … things might fall into place," he said. "I am not here to make up the numbers at five-eighth, I don't really mind where I play."

Bennett said he had already pencilled in several players in his starting side for the Tri-Nations opener against New Zealand at Telstra Stadium on October 15. While he would not reveal who they were, it seems Lockyer will be selected at five-eighth.

So Hindy can run to his car but is ruled out, but Willie, who reckons he's not 100% can tour? No wonder Hindy was so pissed off that he avoided the media - he usually gives the press every access that they want.

I have no offence to Mason - man enough to admit his injury, and gallant enough to publicly admit that others (Skandalis) deserve to be there.

There is no way that this squad is the best we have. It's a trip for the inner circle of players from the NRL's suckhole clubs. How Wests, for example, got only one player while failure clubs got more is rediculous.

IF Hindy is not 100% and is therefore ruled out, no probs. Rules, as hard as they may seem at times to understand, are rules. But ALL unfit players should cop the same deal.

Mason goes + Hindy Stays, Skandalis stays + Creagh goes = Test credibility shot.

Bennett not willing to risk Hindmarsh
Parramatta have expressed their disappointment after forward Nathan Hindmarsh was ruled out of Australia's Tri-Nations campaign with a knee injury.

St George Illawarra forward Ben Creagh has been called in to replace the Eels star and will train with the squad for the first time today.

Australian coach Wayne Bennett says he could not risk selecting a player who was not fully fit.

"He's (Hindmarsh) not totally happy in the sense that he wants to be on the tour and really was keen to go, but he understands why he's not going and what the ramifications are if he plays and it's not fully healed," Bennett said.

Creagh said he was looking forward to joining the squad.

"I just hope to get a lot of experience out of training with the calibre of players that are on the tour and hopefully if I keep training well, I might get picked to play a game," he said.

Hindmarsh has not played since suffering posterior cruciate ligament damage to his right knee during Parramatta's round 26 clash with Brisbane.

The injury forced him out of the finals series where Parramatta was knocked out by North Queensland in a preliminary final.

Dragons prop Jason Ryles also remains in doubt for the Kangaroos.

I'm happy to see Hindmarsh stay home and recover but if Mason himself is admitting he isn't fully fit then why was he selected? Very hypocritical.

Bennet has always got the team he wants at all levels, he has his favourites and picks them regardless of form. Why he wouldn't have pushed for Hindmarsh is a mystery only he can solve.

Mason admitted that he's not 100%, and his form has been well below his best. Selectors have always shown faith in past players, but this year more than any I can remember has shown that reputations mean nothing. Maybe a loss or two from the all-conquering Kangaroos is what it will take to see this change.

I think the squad is about right.

It is unreasonable to suggest that a squad be entirely made up of players in form.

The players selected who are not in the best of form, Mason, Fitzgibbon and Ryan have the runs on the board and are hardened big match players, surely that should count for something ?

Give Hindy a break peeps, He needs to rest his knee and be fit for 2006. I reckon that he rushed things during the semis and that is going to do nothing but permanant dammage...And I wold not wish that on everyone.

i can understand parra sdaying they would have played him in the gf, but if the semis were still going I doubt they'd expect him to play 4-5 games so soon after his injury. obvioulsy players carry niggling injuries, but there has to be doubt on hindmarsh (who i reckon is the best back rower in the game) being fit and not doing further damage.

i'd rather see him miss this series and come back 100% next year than do more damage and missing most of next year

lets face it, mason's only there cos he got injured against the USA

Kenny was still killing it at origin late in his career where kenny was just another player in a below avg eels team

Charlie - go back to worrying about the Broncos and leave the important stuff to those that have an idea....

My gripe, not sure if Misty has the same, is that they have stood Hindmarsh down despite the advice of an orthapaedic surgeon saying he could play. Hazzard is not an orthapaedic surgeon but is of the opinion that Hindmarsh needs three or four more weeks.

To add some hypocrisy, Bennett says in an article that he won't play anyone who is not 100% fit however they aren't sending home Mason who believes he isn't anywhere near 90%. He is picked on the back of loyalty for what happened in America whereas Hindmarsh is shown none.

Selfishly, I am pleased he isn't playing as I'd rather see him start the season fully fit.

i do have an idea colonel...sorry if i am upsetting you about your precious hindy, but i just find it ironic that Hindy was ruled out...much like how Lewis was ruled out in 1990.
Misty and i had a "fun" debate about that a while back...but now the shoe is on the other foot. Poooor hindy.

hahahah...you call that hypocrisy???????

Lewis was the bloody national captain and was not given clearance to play with an arm that would have healed over in GB on the 1990 tour...he was shown zero loyalty.
Was Dr Nathan Gibbs a specialist with regards to broken arms.

Charlie you couldn't buy an idea. I was part of that debate so I understand it.

Hopefully Bennett's loyalty doesn't affect another team....

Mason doesn't believe he is, feels he won't be at 100% until at least he has a full off season under his belt. Did you hear the bit where Bennett said he owed Mason becuase of what happened in America?

Loyalty hasn't helped the Broncos this year nor for a couple. Hopefully it doesn't happen with the Australians.
