Got my hands on League Week - 25 sensational years... compiled by David Middleton.

Came across this old pic.. will bring back some bad memories for us older sharkie supporters.

The tackle that virtually ended Rogers Career.

The tackle that put an end to Steve Roger's playing career in Australia. Canterbury's hooker Mark Bugden's tackle smashed Rogers Jaw. Bugden was suspended for 14weeks for the tackle. he obviously "didn't miss him"

yep I was only a kid but I was shattered.

We had big Jack Gibson on board as our new coach.
We had beat the premiers ( Parra )in a trial match and Sludge had returned from the dark side.

It was the 1st game of the year from memory.

and that's where our premiership dreams ended.

As soon as Sludge went off the field the team went to pieces.


I think we lost the game .

Its not Khan Quigs-noticed the ? and I'm not sure who it is either.(League Encyclopedia says his last year for Cronulla was 1981).
I think that tackle was in the 85 season.
Doesnt look big enough for Khan either.
I was thinking Gary Stares but his last year was 84.
We need a head on shot.

I was at that game, sitting on sideline about 10 metres from where it happened.You could hear the crack from where i was. The end of a great career. I thought the 13 was David Hatch,Maybe not.
As it turns out my wife,s best friend was going out with Mark Bugden,Was a really nice guy,and full of remorse for what he did.We got drunk together at a party and i reminded him of it.

Mark Bugden !! He played for Eels in 89 and 90.

13 is possibly Errol HILLIER. I was at that game also sitting on the hill towards the scoreboard end. Our trial form was great. Everyone was talking about the return of ROGERS back where he belongs after he crossed the bridge in the previous two years. GIBSON coaching and ROGERS running the team on field had everyones hopes up for season 1985. It was no secret that CRONULLA without ROGERS would struggle. And the look on Bugden's face shows how much force he put into swinging his forearm and the fears of all Sharks fans were realised.

I remember that. 1985 was going to be our year. Thousands of people were going to pre season training just to see the great Steve Rogers. All over in one round.
