A Second Melbourne? Where would it be based and how would it impact the Storm?

This was a wild suggestion by Turvey Mortimer not the IC.

My guess is that he is basing it on the A-League Heart, Victory situation whereby they basically created a team in Melbourne so they could have a rivalry game twice a year or so.

It would be great for those 2 games, but as judged in the A-league it would split the supporter base and not really give any benefit.

The only reason for anyone to want a second team in Melbourne is to destroy what League has achieved in the most alien of all environments.

Something that a lot of dinosaurs are desperate for

Yeah, just 'cose AFL are bankrupting themselves to get a second team up in a minority territory, doesn't mean that rugby league should worry about following suit.

Perth, Adelaide and maybe even Wellington surely have to be priorities in terms of new revenue streams before a second Melbourne team gets out of the blocks?

this

lets learn from the horrid mistake the AFL are currently making & will be suffering from for the next 20 years

a 2nd Melb side should be so far off the radar its not even worth mentioning

that is all.

Play out of the same stadium and cut costs for both teams.
Gives the media and fans down there home games every week.
Local derbies twice a year.

I think that is a great idea. Gives Melbourne their S.o_O. type thing. Create a bit of tribalism, and VIC might take some interest.

It will not happen in my life time. Probably not in anyones life time either.

This will be the Storms 15th season of existence and they are still struggling. I don't see that changing anytime soon either. Adding another team down there will only do one thing and that is kill both teams.

Exactly. Just because that other game has created a 2nd Sydney team doesn't nean the NRL should follow suit with a 2nd Melbourne team. Why? Because ulike the opposition, the NRL has hardly lifted a finger and already we have 6 expansion bids begging to get into our comp - and that doesn't even include a 2nd New zealand team or Adelaide which have no bids at present:

Central Coast
Ipswich/Logan
Brisbane II
Central Queensland
PNG
Perth

The NRL has so much more expansion potential and do not need to create teams themselves - they come knocking.

A 2nd Melbourne team is at least 30 years away, and only should only be considered when:

* News Limited are out of the Storm
* the Storm can stand on their own 2 feet fiancially
* the Storm get average crowds of at least 17-18,000
* born and bred Victorians are playing for the Storm (even just a handful)

It might not be as stupid an idea as you think, but certainly not in the next five years.

But 5-10-15 years down the track, why the hell not?

We need to believe the NRL will continue to grow, and hopefully now they have a commission structure in place that actually enables them to have a real strategic focus - markets like a second team in Melbourne must be on the list of potentials.

Think about it: Melbourne could easily support a second team with its population. TV coverage must (surely with the next tv rights) improve that will do nothing but further raise awareness. They have a state-of-the-art stadium. The derby clashes between the two Melbourne teams will sell out - guaranteed - twice per annum. Ratings from Melbourne for big games such as Origin and the Grand Final are crucial in allowing the NRL to compete with the AFL for coverage. Two teams will only assist further in delivering these ratings.

If Sydney are going to have two AFL teams, I cant see why its so impossible that Melbourne will have two NRL teams.

People need to start thinking a little more optimistically at the opportunities. Sadly, a result of the NRLs short-term, risk-averse nature over the last ten years has robbed us of any real belief this stuff is possible.

Perth must be the short term priority, as should be the Central Coast and perhaps another Brisbane team. However, don't discount Melbourne within the next 10-15 years. Maybe earlier if the next TV rights bonanza gets done. If they sell it short again - then heaven help the NRL.
