Bailey's talks with Sharks are off until coaching job is resolved
By Brad Walter
November 28, 2003

Kangaroos utility Phil Bailey has put contract negotiations with Cronulla on hold until the future of coach Chris Anderson is resolved.

Anderson, who arrived home from England with the Australian team on Wednesday, spent much of yesterday with his agent George Mimis and legal representatives to prepare for an appearance before the Sharks board on Monday night.

The Test coach has been summoned to respond to a third breach notice issued just before the Kangaroos' departure for New Zealand on the first leg of their six-week tour, and there is little doubt Cronulla directors plan to sack him.

But Bailey has a get-out clause in his contract if Anderson is no longer coach, and Mimis - who also represents the Test and Origin representative - said talks aimed at upgrading and extending his deal beyond next season would be suspended while there were doubts over the coach.

"It is tied to the coaching issue," Mimis said. "Phil Bailey has a clause in his contract he can activate if Chris is not the coach so I think it's understandable that he wants to wait and see how things eventuate."

Should the board decide to terminate the remaining 12 months of Anderson's contract, which contains a clause entitling him to an automatic two-year extension should the Sharks make the top eight next season, former Wigan coach Stuart Raper is expected to take over.

Raper was recently recruited by Anderson in an assistant coach role and has been overseeing off-season training on his behalf.

With Raper already on the club's payroll, his appointment would save the Sharks money as they are likely to have to offer Anderson a payout on his $400,000 per year contract to avoid a protracted legal battle.

Bulldogs president George Peponis, meanwhile, last night ruled out Anderson joining his brothers-in-law Steve Folkes and Kevin Moore on the club's coaching staff next season.

In other news, former Test captain Laurie Daley, a NSW selector and assistant to coach Phil Gould, is tipped to take over the Country Origin job next season after Parramatta's Brian Smith yesterday announced he would not seek re-appointment in order to concentrate on the Eels.

St George Illawarra prop Jason Ryles is confident of being fit for the opening premiership round in mid-March, despite being told he requires a second shoulder operation. Ryles, who underwent a reconstruction on his left shoulder after being injured during State of Origin, said the surgery was to repair nerve damage.

In Auckland, Warriors players are being tested for pulmonary tuberculosis after hooker Tavita Latu was hospitalised with the infectious condition following chest X-rays at pre-season training to ensure that he had recovered from the bout of pneumonia that ended his finals campaign.

And the Rugby Football League has announced that Widnes will represent England at the World Sevens tournament in Sydney on January 24 and 25.

After having read the above:

The idea of PHIL BAILEY being a Kangaroo is a poor joke. Amongst my mates we have a phrase for chicks we dont rate and it translates well to footy players: "AVERAGE AT BEST"

f**k OFF PHILLIP BAILEY WE DONT WANT OR NEED YOU ANY MORE.

Well I have to agree ShireShark, It just seem that his ego has exploded after rep selection. Yeh he's not a bad player but!!!!!!!! I think he needs to be brought down a few pegs and back down to to earth, he won't be in the rep sides next year when all the regular players are back from there injuries, then what???????

I do wonder why Phil Bailey had a "get-out" clause put into his contract, when all the other players signed under the Anderson regime weren't. :? In any case, the club would be mad if they ever signed a player under those circumstances again.

I disagree. If it wasn't for Anderson, Bailey would still be trying to make something of himself at Manly. Anderson has shown faith in him which Bails obviously appreciates, and this has now turned into loyalty. If anything, there should be more of it.

Speaking of loyalty, you guys aren't showing too much of it to our top tryscorer and one of our best players from the last two years...

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't contract upgrades the norm for players to seek after they have been selected for Origin and Kangaroo sides for the 1st time? I mean Bails was probably going to seek this upgrade regardless of the coaching situation.

Well you might be right Jimbo, however if Kimmorly can commit himself to the club and I think he is more of a loyal Ando supporter than Bailey ever will be, why can't Bailey commit himself to the club as well?????? I think he should do as Kimmorly has, Yeh support Ando but regardless of the outcome make a commitment to the club.

Bailey needs Anderson more than Kimmorley does. Ando is his mentor - its like taking Mr Myagi away from Daniel-san.

Noddy is an established International player, who doesn't need as much guidance anymore. Bails is concerned that his game may suffer if Anderson isn't there to help him continue to improve.

there have been many players who were able to improve all through the history of rugby league and indeed many other sports who have not had the benefit of mr anderson coaching them

i think bailey will be alright

I agree with that. As far as I can see, he is not saying he will automatically leave if Opes is not the coach. But having negotiated the clause in the contract, it would be ridiculous to sign up without waiting to find out who exactly will be coaching next year. For a player still developing, you would want to know who your boss is going to be next year.

All players work better with some coaches than others. Take Preston for example - fantastic under Lang, fairly useless under Opes. Bails goes well under Opes and understandably doesn't want to risk that.

Two years ago, one of the reasons for getting Opes in was that he would attract players to the club. Now we're surprised that dumping him might have the reverse effect.

Well said Dean, that's exactly what I'm getting at.

Bails isn't holding a gun to anyone's head here. All he wants is confirmation of who he's going to be working for, which is the same thing we've been wanting to know for months.

actually when you compare player strength from 2001 to 2004 this is a very debatable point at best

Really? At the start of 2001 our first choice halfback was Jason Ferris...

At the end of 2001 we had three internationals (Stevens, Rogers and McKenna). Next year we will have five (Kimmorley, Bailey, Stevens, Vagana and Lomu).

stevens will never be an international again

bailey wont be next year as opes is unlikely to retain his position

lomu??

that leaves 2

this argument can go in circles

i think results are the most important stat

With all due respect Bailey has alternatives, Kimmorley doesn't. He has 4 more years on a contract regardless.

Think about what money he'd be on now. Now think what he would be wanting now he has made nsw and australia. His holding out. He could maybe double his contract. I'd rather do this now then in the middle of the season.

And I doubt he'd go to the dragons if he is after a good coach or money
