Acting Professional - when a player leaves a club

The club embarrassed themselves with those two comments.

But we've put a lot of time into Chris over the last 3 years, when a lot of people were calling him rubbish and a total liability, they persevered, obviously hoping that they would see a return. We haven't yet, but things are looking promising. Now, he's gone. The only place he was going when we stepped in was the highway back to Cherbourg.

With the time and effort put into perspective, and the fact that he did agree to stick around as recently as Monday night, I can understand Richo and Hando's disappointment. The emotional investment in Chris was huge and these two are obviously passionate. Their passion and disappointment got the better of them this morning. If they had their time again I don't believe that they would of made the comments that they did. It reflected badly on the entire club.

I think the worst thing about it is that Richardson has worked in the business field in a long time and should know better. So doing it in the first place is puzzling. Crowe is no stranger to professionalism either. But he has stuffed up in the past many a time so it's to be expected. But for your CEO to come out and say things like that is quite silly. Not that I can complain. My club had a CEO called Denis Fitzgerald who was the worst example of a CEO with 'foot in mouth' syndrome.

Glad there is a thread on this. I can't believe all the success Souths have had in recent years signing successful players from other clubs, then they turn into sooky bitches as soon as they lose one.

Rusty and Richo need to get the f**k over themselves.

Souths should be cheering. For the first time in two decades they've actually developed a player other clubs actually want. They should be having a party to celebrate really.

I dunno...

If someone I employed was going to the opposition, I'd shake their hand, wish them well and tell them to clean out their desk and hand over the car keys.

I can't ever recall seeing someone going to the opposition in a normal business allowed to work their time out, ever.

Rugby League clubs are professional, but they're not bound by the same set of "rules" as the rest of us.
Contracts.

Besides, Neville Costigan played in last years Dragons GF side.

Well we did show him loyalty. In the first place we picked him up as a Titans reject, then put years and years into him. We suffered through a whole bunch of mediocre performances from him and helped him develop into the player he may be turning into now. How many critics told us over and over again to sack him and get a "good" halfback?
I tire of these boo-hoo sob stories about developing players and clubs demanding a return. Firstly, Sandow's wages would have been minimal - compare that to the halfback wage bill at North Queensland, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Saints, Easts, Wests - in fact everywhere. Secondly - "suffering through mediocre performances" - because he was the best halfback option at your club and has been since debut. If he was so poor - explain what options the club exercised?

We haven't been in the finals since he debuted.
You haven't made the finals since the f*cking dinosaurs debuted!!!!

now I'm obviously not putting all the blame for that on him, but there was a whole lot of losing there and we stuck with him through all that.
So, yes, you are blaming him - unless it was a massive sacrifice putting up with him if it was someone elses fault!

We did a lot for him that hurt us in the short term for the sake of his (and ours) long term growth. But as soon as he showed form and got a big offer, he left.

We showed more loyalty and patience to him than any other team would have. If we dropped him at the worst of it, he'd probably be working in a Maccas right about now, not signing a 2 million dollar contract.
Beau Champion. Greg Inglis. South Sydney hipocrisy.

You signed Sandow for $30k per annum. He owes your club nothing!

Boo-f***ing-hoo.

It's called the salary cap. When you spend all your money on ageing props, lazy backrowers and overweight centres, then you have nothing left to bargain with.

If Souths knew that all this time they were putting in to developing him was going to pay dividends and he was going to go gangbusters this year, then why didn't they leave enough money in the kitty for him?

This is actually a good read, just shows how massive his ego is.
Or how hypocritical and deluded the journo who wrote it is.... and by your comments, how incredibly naive some posters on this forum can be at times.

Here's another sample of this same esteemed scribe's work, where he shares his thoughts about his own profession...

"Journalists aren’t very bright. They feel as if they are, because they’re pontificating to the world each day, but the truth is that anyone can be a journalist.
I can count on one hand the number of journalists I know who are truly brilliant minds. All you need these days to qualify for journalism is big tits, a pretty face
or a head so ugly it balances the ledger. They employ uglies once in a while just to deflect the very criticism I’m throwing out there."

In being so cynical and patronising towards his own colleagues, it seems that Jack Marx is the one with the ego problem, not Russell Crowe.

I've actually met both. Guess which one has the ego... Are you a Russell Crowe apologist? Do you believe in your great leader?

Seems like both you AND Jack Marx have an ego problem, wanker.

An ego problem? Or is it the fact I'm a journo which allows me access to both...

Does your bum buddy read the Book of Feuds to you before bed time? He gets under the duvet with you doesn't he?

Hahaha. Like saying a championship for the Gymea Giants Under 12s is the Shire's equivalent of the Football World Cup.
I never said it was as good as the Pulitzer. I said it was the Australian equivalent. Like what the ESL is to the NRL. But thanks for that enlightening post. Troll.

Sandow is the closest thing to a young talented player the Bunnies have had for 70 years, no wonder they farked up the negotiations.
